How will we know what tier our area is in?

There are a lot of boroughs in this country and I'm sure Boris won't list them all out tonight. I have no idea what level of risk my area is at and I'm sure a huge amount of people don't. I wonder how this will be made clear so we can know what our restrictions are?

I'm wondering this too. It sounds like we'll get an outline of the tier system but most of us won't know where we fit into it yet. I hate all this uncertainty and leaking of information and misinformation.

I imagine that there might be some sort of tool where you put your postcode in and it tells you. That would probably be too sensible though

FourTeaFallOut · 12/10/2020 10:54

Surely they'll just have an interactive map and you'll either access it directly or your usual local media will do the work for you?

(I mean, I say surely like they would do something sensible like this - but who knows?)

What about people who have no internet access, I hope they wont be forgotten. The majority have mobile phones and internet but someone like my late DM wouldnt have had a clue how to check this and used the BBC news for her information. Others who may not have family around wouldnt know what was going on, or there tier level, what restrictions were in place unless reported in a way that all have access too.

Vam tam doing a press briefing on sky at 11am
May give a clue . Or not

The BBC website already has a postcode checker for number of cases per area, so I’m presuming they could rejig this.

Agreed with the point about it being all online though - but then with things changing so quickly I’m not sure how many times they could be doing leaflet drops.

Bramblespoint · 12/10/2020 11:03

Won't the track and trace app tell you? It says risk level in your area so I'd assumed you could find out through that. And then local press for those without internet?

toffeekiwi · 12/10/2020 11:04

Do you live in the North? Tier 3.
Do you live in the South? Tier 2.
Do you live in a constituency that the Tories want to control? Whatever you like.

TokyoSushi · 12/10/2020 11:05

I think it'll be up to your council to tell you (we're likely going into tier 3)

MakeLemonade · 12/10/2020 11:07

Assume they will have a cases per 100,000 threshold - you can check this on the BBC website. And those thresholds will translate into tiers.

Pootles34 · 12/10/2020 11:07

The app says what level of risk your area is at - maybe they'll use that? I've no faith in the app though - husband tested positive on Thurs, on test ordered through app, and neither I nor a couple of close contacts have heard anything through the app.

Local news and radio will do a good job of keeping people up to date in their area.

Just need to enter your postcode.

By getting off your arse and watching the news, reading a news article, reading MN or checking your local council website.

Its not difficult.

PuzzledObserver · 12/10/2020 11:13

Multiple channels - the BBC lookup and the Test and Trace app as already mentioned, plus local news media, and/or councils.

What interests me is how frequently the classification will be reviewed. Also, will they incorporate hysteresis into the system, e.g if 100 cases/100K triggers you going into tier 2, will you come out of tier 2 as soon as the rate falls below 100, or will they keep you in it until it comes down to 75, or 50, say?

If I were designing this system (I'm not), I would say that a move to a higher level would be reviewed initially after 3 weeks, then weekly after that. And the criterion for moving down a level would be when the new case rate was half of the rate which triggered the move up a level.

BabyLlamaZen · 12/10/2020 11:59

Have people really not been checking their area already? 🤦‍♀️

ifonly4 · 12/10/2020 12:06

I think most of us are aware of roughly how many cases there have been in our boroughs over the last few months, and many of us have access to social media to check exactly where our borough will be tiered. I guess each borough will be reviewed weekly in the lower tiers as things can soon change, ie three weeks ago we had seven cases 100k, now it's 47 so could soon tip into what I assume will be tier 2. Local news and papers will keep others up to date.
