Pubs to close but not restaurants?

So can pubs open just for meals?

Surely there's no difference? J

I think it's to do with people drinking too much and not adhering to distancing. People going out specifically for a meal to a nicer restaurant are less likely to get pissed.

Take it Wetherspoon's can stay open then? Ours is full of students.

I don't agree with closing either of them but there's loads of differences. I've never been to a restaurant with the sole intention of getting sh** faced, nor have I ever downed six pints during my main course.

In the tier 3 restrictions, for now, it looks like restaurants will stay open but it's still under discussions whether table service in pubs for food can stay. You can imagine Tim 'Tory Donor' Martin lobbying away for that.

That'd make it even more pointless. It just isn't going to make the difference needed when all the other stuff stays open and there's such poor enforcement of the rules that are in place.

In a restaurant people are more likely to remain seated rather than walk around. They're also less likely to drink a lot and if they do it's tempered by eating at the same time. Also it deters groups of e.g. students who don't want to buy meals.

I always thought it was a bit unfair that restaurants and pubs which only serve drinks are always lumped in together.

I work at a village pub which half is a restaurant, I wonder how that would work
