COVID toes

DS2 has been under the weather since visiting the orthodontist roughly 2 weeks ago. He is 14 and at internet school so this is only the real risky contact he has had. But loads of other teens visit the orthodontist and they are back at local schools that have reported outbreaks.

I initially thought his GI symptoms might be related to the fact that he has recently started ADHD medication which has been increased to the max dose over the past two months or so. He has been skipping meals, feeling nauseous, stomach ache, diarrhoea etc. But now he has developed red, sore, swollen toes with some blistering and leaking fluid.

I have added him on my Zoe app and reported his symptoms to them. I will contact the GP on Monday.

He is being largely confined to his room and has sole use of a bathroom. Personal hygiene skills are terrible (also ASD) and he struggles to accurately report symptoms - he has a long history of being hyposensitive to painful stimuli and locating it eg he only reported stomach ache when he had severe tonsillitis requiring months of antibiotic treatment.

DS1 has severe anxiety and is freaking out, wearing a mask indoors and wants to break out the plastic sheeting and impose strict quarantine.

Anyone have experience or advice?

I have a picture - you can't really see the redness but it shows the blistering

I expect the Zoe app will ask him to get tested. You'll get an email from them tomorrow if they do.

It could be a combination of a cold and the ADHD meds but the toe blister would concern me. He doesn't have any if the so called 3 main symptoms but everything he's got is a possible symptom, especially the toes.

Would he do a test? My DD12 has ADHD and ASD and was selected for random testing. She hates anything medical but amazed me by doing the test on herself with much less fuss than I expected. I was surprised she did it at all to be honest.

I hope your DS is ok. I think you are right to be cautious and for him to distance a bit from you before you can establish what he has. I'm not sure GPs are as clued up on Covid toes as Zoe app users are. The UK medical world seems far too focused on the cough, temperature and loss of smell and taste.

Do you know if the test would be self test at home if Zoe request one? I think he would be OK with this but DS1 would explode if I had to take DS2 to a test centre (in case you are wondering at my priorities - this is not just 'normal' anxiety, this is ASD haven't left the house for 5 years anxiety).

Yes you would be given the choice when you go online to book.

Jellybean27 · 10/10/2020 17:38

Ouch. Hope you get to the bottom of it and they heal fast for him!

Is he taking methylphenidate? 54mg?

StarCat2020 · 14/10/2020 18:05

Sorry ignore if too intrusive

Early90sdecor · 14/10/2020 22:25

Poor lad, I hope you get your results soon. DH’s covid toe didn’t look like that - the whole toe was red/purple and swollen, and it took a few weeks to go down. It happened a few weeks after the main symptoms (cough and temp) had gone.

KOKOagainandagain · 15/10/2020 14:34

He's taking Zagattin 72 mgs. So methylphenidate hydrochloride. More than max dose but signed off by consultant - he is 14 and 5ft 11.

Has no classic symptoms. There seems to be a lot of variance in appearance and do look quite different in asymptomatic teens. Could be severe chilblains but no reason to develop them as he had only left the centrally heated house to go to the orthodontist.

Some examples of covid toes www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/covid-fingers-and-toes-what-does-it-look-like_uk_5f33a738c5b64cc99fe02c60?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAGV1FfCRE42r0Oa2LHKBsZkdnXl2O78r7OsrbfqGFuFBdBMgZby2MNHiBLPRL46fchtnIgHUdUV7mkJqiYtT8G7ktzxeYNvKQx-R7ATGDHbAYRzpNkq0uYdvbicT-

Sensible to test and isolate but at this stage he may no longer be infectious anyway. How old is the other son as if a child any infection he gets may be asymptomatic and talking about that may be some help. I'm also a fan of magnesium for anxiety, feed him some dark chocolate.

KOKOagainandagain · 15/10/2020 18:16

DS1 is 19. He also currently has tonsillitis. Day 6. Fun times.

So methylphenidate hydrochloride
I am on Concerta XL 108mg and it is a lifesaver.

Do you think that the medication is helping him with his ADHD?

PastelPompoms · 16/10/2020 06:40

A member of my family had the classic Covid toes, it was way back in April when it was only just starting to be recognized as a symptom (he also had a cough, running nose, tiredness etc).

The redness On his toes etc lasted months and months but finally disappeared late summer. I did have pics not sure if I still do, will have a look!
