Long covid skepticism

Ohalrightthen · 09/10/2020 15:32

According to my doctor father, "long covid" is basically nonexistent in under 18s and over 65s. He was amused by the coincidence that the only people who seem to be experiencing extended symptoms and effects of the disease are those who are "likely to want a decent reason to call in sick to work"

Not sure how much i believe that, but it does seem weird that kids (who've been off school anyway) and retired people don't seem to be getting long covid. Is there a medical reason that it's only affecting people 20ish-60ish?

Doctors aren’t infallible, some used to consign epileptics to mental institutions, argue against germ theory, advise people to smoke etc.

Also a doctor can’t separate their social views from their medical opinion (and please note that word ‘opinion’) then they have no business expecting their view to be treated as an actual ‘doctors’ opinion because it’s not, it’s a political one.

Ah feck - got caught out by a spammy fuck Angry

wellstopdoingitthen · 01/06/2021 15:16

I know of two primary aged children with long covid and a lady in her 70's

wellstopdoingitthen · 01/06/2021 15:18

There are also a lot of children being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after recovering from Covid. Not sure if that would be classed at 'long Covid'.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 01/06/2021 15:23

Some people get post viral syndrome from any virus. Calling it ‘Long Covid ‘ is just more fear-peddling like mutant/variant etc hyperbolic language to scare the gullible.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 01/06/2021 16:33

I have it. I'm not using it to skive off work. Infact I haven't missed any work, I just get on with it and carry my, new to me, inhalers and wheeze my way through the day. Hope it goes away soon.
Your Dad might be a Doctor, but he's still a bit of an arse.

Yousoundlikeaknob · 01/06/2021 16:41

Self employed long Covider here OP and having a pretty good work year. But when I’m not working I’m in BED. Like now at 4.39pm on a beautiful sunny afternoon when I could be cracking on and growing my business. Or I could’ve looking after my children but I can’t do that either right now.

You and your father need to look at the evidence before you judge.

I’m off for a kip

Load of cobblers . If you know people suffering and I do this is very insulting and ignorant.

AlmostSummer21 · 01/06/2021 17:25

@Toontown

Is he the same twattish doctor that declared my 10 year life ruining battle with ME a "middle class fad"?
Sadly there are a lot of them around.
Unsure33 · 01/06/2021 17:26

But other viruses do not cause multiple blood clots through the body or tears in lungs or kidney problems so of course the after affects will be different.

BunsyGirl · 01/06/2021 17:35

My uncle age 68 has “long Covid”. He’s had numerous problems over the last 18 months including two minor strokes due to blood clots. Interestingly, we have a history of autoimmune conditions in our family, affecting the female line. I had what would now be diagnosed as post viral syndrome after a bad bout of flu when I was 13. My uncle’s always been fit and well.. until he got Covid. I was also very unwell with Covid, but not to the same extent as him...and I have had a really bad reaction to the AZ vaccine, as did one of my female cousins. Those family members who had Pfizer or Moderna have faired much better. AZ seems to cause problems in those that are predisposed to auto immune conditions, the same as Covid itself. I would love to have a chat with your dad.

To be fair to the OP's father he's quite likely to have revised his views in the 8 months since he first voiced them Smile

3cats2kids · 01/06/2021 18:01

This is what people with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia have had to put up with for years in the face of extremely disabling symptoms. Doctors like this are a disgrace.

Theworldisfullofgs · 01/06/2021 18:03

Are you sure your Dad's a doctor? In what field?

I'm hoping @susie477 is joking, but I'm not sure.

wellstopdoingitthen · 01/06/2021 18:39

@Susie477

I do hope you are joking.
My son (25) works very hard, definitely not a hypochondriac & I have watched him deteriorate after having covid last March. It's very worrying.

Don’t let the health and life outcomes of people facing poverty, hardship, redundancy, relationship issues and a lot worse stand in the way of your cynicism will you @Lippy333
