Symptoms 14 days after contact

DS has been isolating for 14 days since one of his classmates had a positive test. Today is the last day of isolation and out of nowhere he's all of a sudden come down with a fever and is very tired and lethargic. He was perfectly fine when he woke up, this started at about 10am ish.

We had him tested straight away (pleasantly surprised to get a test so quickly) so hopefully we'll know soon enough but is this likely to be Covid? It just feel like such a long time for it to incubate. That said, he's been isolating so what else could he have picked up, unless it's something from one of the rest of the household?

Extra concerned because I'm 13 weeks pregnant. Any rational thoughts appreciated while I sit here panicking for me and him!

Don't panic!!! Even if he does have it, he'll very probably be fine. If he then passes it to you - and there's a less than 50% chance he will, research into household transmission shows - you'll very probably be fine too, and baby!

If he was on Day 14 then he's still in the incubation period so of course it's possible. (And in fact the 14 day period is only the most frequently reported window until symptoms occur, there is a much smaller chance of them appearing later.)

Hope you get the results quickly 🌝

I suppose either it’s possible, or he’s got it via you?

Seeline · 09/10/2020 15:24

Anyone else in the house who could have it asymptomatically?

SexTrainGlue · 09/10/2020 15:27

The incubation period does range up to 14 days, and so there will be some people who do come down with it then (though for most people it's 5-6 days)

If he's been isolating, then yes it's possible it came from the classmate. Or if you have not been able to isolate him within the home, then he couid have picked it up from one of the family.

As he's young, it's likely to be mild. You might want to isolate yourself from him until you get his test result.

There does seem to be a cold going round, so perhaps one of you has brought that home?

Thank you. I suppose I was hoping someone would tell me that after 14 days it's unlikely!

It's possible that another member of the household has it and is asymptotic but save for DH nipping to the shop very briefly once or twice, we've only really been in contact with my eldest's school friends and we would know if they'd had it as his bubble would have closed.

You wouldn't know they had it if they didn't have symptoms - they wouldn't know they had it!

I suppose, but they've been in school so will have passed it on to more than just us so surely not everyone will be asymptomatic?

Is it 14d since test or 14d since last contact.
There are a % that go even over the 14d

Keepdistance · 09/10/2020 15:41

Looking at the unis some only had 10% with symptoms.

Seeline · 09/10/2020 15:42

I don't know - there was an outbreak at one of the unis a couple of weeks back where 750 tested positive, but only 78 were showing symptoms so levels can be quite high amongst younger people.

14 days since last contact I think. We had a message from school on the Saturday night to say someone had tested positive and he needed to isolate until 9th but we don't know who that was or which days they'd been in school that week. Someone else then tested positive the week after and they'd definitely been in on the Friday so we were told to isolate him for another day. There were four positives in the class but all in the first week of isolation.

Just to follow up, his test was negative. Results in 29 hours which I was very impressed with!
