Woken up with a sore throat but not one of the main symptoms

I'm a secondary teacher. We have had several positive cases, I only posted a couple of days ago that we weren't being told when students in our classes had tested positive. I've woken up this morning with a very noticeable sore throat which hurts when I swallow. You can also hear my chest sounds bad when I take a deep breath. I'm surprised to see that on the nhs app a sore throat isn't one of the 3 main symptoms, but the WHO states that 'The virus can cause a range of symptoms, from ranging from mild illness to pneumonia. Symptoms of the disease are fever, cough, sore throat and headaches'.

Basically my question is should I be ringing school, setting cover and isolating?? We are already so understaffed I don't want to look like a time waster. I'm also totally perplexed as to how I even managed to get a 'sore throat' in the first place. I've been wearing a mask in the corridors and sanitising my hands constantly.

Can a small country of 66 million test everybody who has a cold though ?
Even on here two replies from germany one saying test for all cold symptoms other saying gp decides
Many of us can't just stay home and be tested with a cold as work will say not one of the main symptoms and getting a test isn't easy
With 4 of us in the house and one with allergies that often result in sore throat / snuffy nose then we would be having time off couple times a month over winter and having tests etc
Its an impossible situation for most as school age kids have lots of colds etc this time of year
My ds friend diagnosed with tonsillitis no covid test,

Hope you are feeling better soon

MrsMcMuffins · 10/10/2020 09:52

Well schools keep pushing the attendance sending letters in the middle of a pandemic home so I think parents feel pressured to send kids in. We had a letter saying DS’s attendance was too low 2 weeks into term when he had been off one day for genuine sickness. Madness!

Sorry, just jumping on here. Does anyone know 'roughly' how long a home kit takes to return results? Sent one back lunch time Weds and still no news.
Anyone had results from a home kit? It it email or text you received ?

ForthPlace · 10/10/2020 10:53

So pleased you did the right thing by staying at home and testing. I work with schools, in too many cases, staff are 'risking it' and by the time they realise it is COVID and return a positive test it is too late as other staff and children are already infected.
I've had schools close as all senior leaders have passed COVID to each other and schools closed by large outbreaks caused by equipment being passed from one positive person to others.

A friend of mine tested positive recently. Her first, and main, symptom was a sore throat, that and fatigue

She didn't have a cough and she didn't lose her sense of taste and smell.

Natsku · 10/10/2020 11:13

Can anyone say exactly what other countries use as testing criteria?

In Finland:
fever
cough
sore throat
shortness of breath
muscle pain
fatigue
runny nose
nausea
diarhhoea.
(with loss of sense of smell and taste as an addendum but not on the list)

A nurse decides if you need a test based on the symptoms or not but they seem to be erring on the side of caution. They're going to do combined covid-flu tests for flu season which makes sense.

whatsleep · 10/10/2020 11:23

Sounds like you’ve done the right thing. Fingers crossed your result doesn’t take too long. Rest up as either way this will help.

JamminDoughnuts · 10/10/2020 11:24

plenty of work places would not take kindly to people staying home with cold symptoms.

Kidneybingo · 10/10/2020 12:31

@JamminDoughnuts

plenty of work places would not take kindly to people staying home with cold symptoms.
Maybe, but they are the part of the problem. Plus the OP has been around known positive cases.
LIZS · 10/10/2020 13:01

Dd just tested positive with a sore throat as symptom.

Jrobhatch29 · 10/10/2020 13:15

I'm waiting on results for a sore chest, very brief temp, headache and a hellish sore throat. I've also had ear pain and weird tingling in my feet. It's the worst timing. My nanna died yesterday and I just want to be with my family

cathyandclare · 10/10/2020 13:21

Get well soon @Jrobhatch29, hope you get good news on results quickly.

Fingers crossed for you @Mogtheforgetfulmum too

thisusernameismine · 10/10/2020 15:47

Oh @Jrobhatch29 I'm so sorry to hear your news xxx

thisusernameismine · 10/10/2020 15:49

@123rd sent ours (3 of them) in tuesday's post this week. We are all positive - DD result at 9pm weds, DH around midday on thurs and I only got mine this morn!

123rd · 10/10/2020 16:05

thisusernameismine oh... I was thinking maybe positive test get reported quicker- wishful thinking!

ImAncient · 10/10/2020 16:36

Sorry to hear that @Jrobhatch29.

I’m quite cross today as dc is isolating again as classmate has covid. The other classmates aren’t isolating. Dc thinks it’s unfair as I’m saying you have to isolate but the other teens are living it up but not in school. They were at a lock-in last night 🤷🏻‍♀️.

ForthPlace · 10/10/2020 19:37

plenty of work places would not take kindly to people staying home with cold symptoms

And I can tell you, Public Health didn't 'take kindly' to shutting down a whole school (and neither did parents, awful storm) just because a staff member went to work with 'cold symptoms'.

ImAncient · 11/10/2020 20:31

How’s everyone doing?

Spottydoggy · 12/10/2020 22:27

DD had a negative result returned this evening after posting her sample back on Thursday.
She’s mainly had a sore throat, headache, coughing, fatigue etc.
DS (20) has also come down with a throat infection today so it’s obviously about. At least we know it’s not Covid related though.

thisusernameismine · 12/10/2020 22:31

Have you had results yet @Mogtheforgetfulmum ?

Elgin78 · 12/10/2020 22:44

Back in March I only had a mild sore throat and then loss of taste and smell (3 days later). Was subsequently tested which suggested I'd had the virus and had associated antibodies, so it's conceivable you might.

thisusernameismine · 13/10/2020 06:53

How is your sense of smell now @Elgin78 ?

Elgin78 · 13/10/2020 07:10

Remarkably it returned in a week -10 days, but in the interim it was a remarkably weird experience as no blocked nose / congestion, just a total absence of smell and taste, to extent I couldn't even smell toxic nappies/taste strongly flavoured food... it wasn't actually flagged as a symptom at the time so I didn't socially distance from family (ate off same cutlery as kids, shared a bed w husband), and they were totally unaffected. Really odd all round!
Aware of how fortunate I am given range of experiences...

Mogtheforgetfulmum · 15/10/2020 22:54

@thisusernameismine I was negative but still have an awful ongoing cough as has Dh. I'm obviously back in school now and just hoping it wasn't a false negative!
