School return confusion

I’m totally stumped with this and I think I understand it but also completely don’t.
My cousin tested positive for covid on Saturday her child had gone to his fathers as usual the day before.
He had remained there since and had a test himself which was negative.
School are saying he can return as his test was negative, however could he not still test positive if tested again as it’s only 6 days since he was with his mother and his test was Monday so might it not have shown up then?

I’m definitely not over the top policing them I just can’t quite fathom if that’s correct or not and she’s stumped too also there are a few at the school who are vulnerable.

That doesn't make sense - if the child had been in close contact with her in the 48 hours before she showed symptoms then he should be isolating. He shouldn't have had a test unless he was showing symptoms himself, if he was in close contact he could still be incubating the virus for up to 14 days and still show negative on a test.

The child should be isolating for 14 days starting when he last saw his mum. Members of his father's household dont need to self isolate unless he tests positive. Sounds like the school is a bit confused.

That’s what we thought that it should be 14 days. I think his father got him tested as he didn’t want to be stuck home all the time- it’s just ridiculous.
