Flowers being delivered to hospital

Does anyone know about flower deliveries?

My mum is retiring in a few weeks after 40 years as a midwife. I wanted to be able to fly to the UK for her retirement but that’s not possible. I was thinking of arranging for a bouquet of flowers to be delivered to her at the hospital on her last day. She doesn’t work in NICU or with any high-risk cases, she’s on the regular post-natal ward.

Are florists able to deliver flowers to hospitals at the moment? I was talking to a friend about it here and it hadn’t occurred to me that it could be a problem until my friend mentioned it. I haven’t ordered anything yet.

I would ring the admin normal hospital number for the specific hospital you are talking about

@seayork2020 good idea! I’ll call them tomorrow. Thank you!

I think you'd be better having them delivered to home.

Hi I work in a hospital we had a delivery of flowers last week for a patient so it may be possible

DPotter · 08/10/2020 02:46

Most hospitals I know don't allow flowers for patients in 'normal' times so it would be a very good move to check with the hospital.

I think perhaps best to arrange a home delivery. Whilst a nice gesture I dont think the hospital will appreciate any additional risk right now.

The OP is checking but her mum is a staff member

I think it's a lovely idea but it would mean either your mum or another member of staff probably having to come off the ward to take them from the delivery driver. It's easy enough to supply a patient with a vase/container for bedside, but where would your mum put them till the end of her shift? Nurses station/break room? And her colleagues will also be no doubt bringing in their own presents for her. I think I'd get them delivered to her home the day before so she can show off a pic if she wants to.

She’s a midwife on post-natal. She doesn’t have any contact with “patients”. She’s on the regular post-natal ward where women spend a few hours or a day or two and then go home. The maternity unit is in a separate building on a different street to the main hospital. So it’s no different from having flowers delivered to an office, I suppose.

I did consider having them sent to her home but she has made it quite clear after 40 years of working for the NHS that as soon as she retires she’s going to be out and about enjoying herself every day, and so she should. She’s got herself a National Trust membership and plans to use that to the max. Walks on the beach, meeting up with friends, etc. I don’t think she will be at home much. She lives in a block of flats where all deliveries are left on the pavement outside because of COVID. The property management has forbidden delivery drivers coming into the building (it’s a block of flats for over 55s only) so things are just left outside and things have gone missing.

I would order flowers that come delivered in their own vase.

Speak to her manager, I think it's likely to be ok if someone is able to leave the ward for five mins to collect them and she takes them home the same day.
