...which Boris plans to expand. I have children in primary and secondary. and any tutoring that happened was done by us. However, there were supposed to be tutoring catch up sessions for kids who needed it - did they actually happen?

Has anyone seen sight or sign of this? Or of the summer schools that were supposed to happen? Or any other extra measures that relate to helping kids catch up after schools closed to most children?

Watching with interest. I think funds were supposed to be rolled out in November...

bookgirl1982 · 07/10/2020 07:15

They are due to start from November. The tutoring providers haven't been confirmed as yet.

I work with schools in Wales and in the county I work they have recruited teachers or TAs using the Welsh government funds. But my children's schools haven't given me any info on how they are putting it to use.

It's still in the process of being set up, I understand. They have employed a number of 'learning mentors' (ie not qualified teachers) at a low rate of pay but I've read that their services will be charged to the parents of the tutored child. I don't believe the service has yet competed its engagement of qualified teachers.

Summer schools didn't happen, nor were retired / escaped teachers contacted about being drafted in to support schools or summer schools. I myself am an escaped teacher, I got in touch with DfE to make sure my details were up to date in case they needed to contact me as I would have been happy to help but they said nothing was in the pipeline.

Absolutely nothing happening here. I teach in a highly vulnerable area too. Obviously in school we're doing a lot but have had no external support at all and nothing's been mentioned Hmm

It’s on its way. There’s choices about how the funding is used - We’ve signed up to an agency who will provide us with someone soon.

There’s other funding that schools can use to provide additional tutoring - all of our staff are doing before and after school sessions beginning after half term.

None here

Our schools have just been notified of the amount of money they will receive from the £650m pot and when it will be paid (being paid in three instalments).

Usual Government/media hype about something that hadn’t actually been planned out, so summer schools were never going to happen

karenkanta · 07/10/2020 08:06

I haven't seen any sign of it. My child's standard of education at school has rapidly deteriorated, with bubbles rather than sets, loads of old teachers have left, lots new teachers who struggle with teaching and classroom management, some of them have walked out after a week, so no consistency, and barely any learning done. It's totally crap. There's no catch up at all, it's not even at the same standard as it was at the beginning of last year.

Dustballs · 07/10/2020 10:18

It’s the same for us @karenkanta. Primary is ok but Secondary has massively deteriorated. Behaviour is dreadful and loads of teachers have left or are off.

I question every day why we bother sending DC in. To catch the virus seems to be the only reason at the moment.

BeNiceLikeIRL · 07/10/2020 11:19

Is this funding targeted? E.g. would it be more likely to go to a school with high FSM numbers? Is it targeted at yeargroups e.g. 11 and 13?
Is it targeted at pupils who are failing or any student not reaching their potential?

karenkanta · 07/10/2020 11:25

It's so upsetting dustballs I enrolled my child on to an online English literature study class after school twice a week, to try and go some way to making up for everything she's now missing at school. I felt so sad for her when she said that it was really good, just like school used to be last year, but isn't any more. I worry for the future for our kids. They've really been let down.
