Thames Water customers without water in East London. Supermarkets quickly selling out of bottled water.

Over to you Sadiq Boris Matt Hancock. Im sure we will see a big statement about this from them given their concern for public health.

Oh give over!

Silly, maybe nasty attempt, to cause worry that was so transparent a dormouse would see through it.

I hope your life stays so worry free that a BROKEN PIPE (!!!!!!) is big enough to cause you such consternation. .

HeIenaDove · 07/10/2020 17:17

Thank You for proving me right.

Dear god... Some people will try to make everything about sodding Covid. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Burst pipes happen way more often than global pandemics and last for far far less time.

LovelyLovelyMe · 07/10/2020 17:40

Grin Grin

Cocklepops · 07/10/2020 17:40

I, for one, am shocked it didn’t make the headlines to be honest. Every other slightest thing that happens in London seems to.

Bit of snow anywhere in Greater London area= worst winter conditions since the dawn of time.
Stormy weather = four horsemen of the apocalypse are on The Mall.

Meanwhile the rest of the country tends to crack on...

Hellomoonstar · 07/10/2020 17:54

It is a race to the bottom op. A pp even said we not living in a third world country. Where you live in the world don’t matter as much as who you are and how much disposable income you have.

A right to expect and demand better service is something we could do in this country. I don’t know about afterwards, but yesterday I attempted to call Thames water to see if the problem was coming from our side or theirs. My phone just rang and rang until it automatically disconnected itself. How? I don’t know. So I doubt many people just kept trying and weren’t extremely tempted to break self isolation to get some water.

MynamarisBurma · 07/10/2020 17:56

This is why utilities should NEVER be run for the benefit of share holders !

HeIenaDove · 07/10/2020 17:58

YY @Hellomoonstar And then they would have been blamed for breaking self isolation. IF someone has done that i dont blame them at all.

In 1976 we were on holiday in Suffolk and there was no water (a bit vague on the details...) but we cleaned our teeth in R White’s lemonade!!

LovelyLovelyMe · 07/10/2020 18:49

I've got the advert tune to R White's in my head now! "I'm a secret lemonade drinker"..

alwaysanauntie · 08/10/2020 17:29

Thames Water will provide bottled water stations if necessary so not sure why everyone is wasting their money in the supermarket. These events aren't unusual and there's incident plans for dealing with them (although don't always work 100% or can be slow to put into action). Not a nice situation to be in but possibly overreacting...

Scottsy100 · 08/10/2020 17:52

Surely putting this in the press would just cause more stupid people to go out and buy it when it’s completely unnecessary

Helen1224 · 08/10/2020 18:15

I heard about this on BBC news yesterday morning. So it was news worthy

Electricfairy · 08/10/2020 18:25

Various governments privatised ultilities so they are now run for shareholder profit. The process of privatisation involved huge expense to taxpayers, inefficiency and loss of expertise and did not lead to consumer 'choice' (supposedly the benefit of market-driven policies). (Even if some were poorly run when state-owned.) When a privatised company messes up, people blame the govt and expect it to clear up the damage.

TheGreatWave · 08/10/2020 18:52

I was on holiday last year and the water went off on our last morning, that was fun trying to get us all out in a semi state of cleanliness. Had a couple of little bottles of water which meant we could brush teeth at least.

These things happen all the time and is generally a total inconvenience for everyone.

EmpressoftheMundane · 08/10/2020 18:55

Agree wholeheartedly that utilities should be publicly run organisations.

grifffendor · 08/10/2020 19:34

I live in London but not in the east , this happens once or twice a year normally due to burst water mains that why I always store a big jug of fresh water , keep my kettle full and keep a really big bottle of water . yes its annoying but what can you do but just to crack on with it . I remember two years ago just after the beast from east I had a slow burst from a pipe that start life as puddle but was threatening to turn into a pond in my front garden , they had to cut off the supply to whole street to fix it .
had my Nextdoor neighbour ranting and raving on my doorstop accusing me for not letting her know they were going to cut off supply when she could see for herself on the sign they left they were planing to fix it week before they did fix it and that the water was going to stop while its being fixed and had the date on . it was only for few hours . but that did not stop her ringing up the company and making a fuss over it , hardly news flash but someone like my neighbour lives off drama and loves good moan about it . it was a really big thing for her not able to have bath , or able to have cup tea or wash clothes for few hours while her kids at school that got access to water . no big deal in my eyes but in her eyes it was bbc headlines . they had this kinda thing in with world war two and had to deal with water shortages all the time , so they learned to live with it and carry on especially hard London was hit in the war . a lot Londoners sucked it up back then and still do , unless they are fancy Nancy drama queen type .

Thinkingthinking · 08/10/2020 19:49

I live in the area, it was crap not being able to wash the baby properly in the evening but it was back on by morning. I think there are still some homes effected by it though and it does make you remember how lucky we are to have abundant, safe water on tap. To give Thames Water their credit it was an enormous burst pipe which then flooded woodland which then had to be pumped out before the pipe could be fixed which I think they’re still working on. Water has been rerouted from elsewhere in the meantime. Not really anything they or politicians could have foreseen or expedited.

Straven123 · 08/10/2020 21:59

Agree wholeheartedly that utilities should be publicly run organisations.

And when the water supply stops just what happens - the magic tax funded water fairy waves her magic wand?

nannykatherine · 08/10/2020 22:33

It was on the news !!!!

Biilie82 · 09/10/2020 11:52

And mean while my part of the country has been out of lockdown for a total of 2 weeks since March and no one apart from those affected have had much of a clue or idea what it’s been like 🤷‍♀️ I could complain about news coverage or I could just carry on getting on with it

Dawnlassie · 09/10/2020 12:27

Why would you want it to make the news? To spread panic and fear? Putting that all over the papers is the last thing we want.

Duemarch2021 · 09/10/2020 16:58

Some people are missing the point here... OP is saying that at this koment in time it is even more important that people have a flow of water. Not just for drinking but because of the fact we are being told to contantly wash our hands! The point is.... how can we adhere to government rules of "wash your hands" when they have no water. Even if just for 1 day. No water for 1 day is a danger to health

IrmaFayLear · 09/10/2020 18:22

But pipes burst every day - always have, always will. It’s an inconvenience, but hardly the end of the world. Slap some hand sanitiser as an emergency substitute for hand washing.

The water going off for a few hours is really the least of our problems at the moment.

HeIenaDove · 09/10/2020 18:26

@Duemarch2021

Public health issues not helping the Covid situation is only worthy of blame when its the public thats causing it.
