Do we need to isolate?

17 replies

Me and my son spent a day with my friend and her son 13 days ago (14 tomorrow)

Today her son has developed a cough, and her husband has a temperature. They are being tested tomorrow.

Should we be isolating?

No
They look for contacts in the 48 hours before symptoms start

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 06/10/2020 20:34

Not officially no, only when they get a positive test result. However, if it is relatively easy for you to isolate from now I would recommend it for the greater good of those you may come into contact with.

For how long though? It’s 14 tomorrow since we see them.

They don't need to isolate if their last contact was 13 days ago though - even if they get a positive test

dementedpixie · 06/10/2020 20:40

Test and trace ask for those they were in contact with 48 hours before the symptoms started. If you saw them 13 days ago then they wouldn't have been contagious. You do not need to isolate even if they test positive

@dementedpixie

Is this definite?

If you last saw them 14 days tomorrow then your 'isolation' time would have been over anyway.

MRex · 06/10/2020 20:46

No, if he's just got symptoms now then the chances of him having been contagious 13 days ago should be zero. If you'd infected him asymptomatically (might just for the timeline) then you're probably better now too. Either way - no need to isolate.

*fit not for

This is what test and trace ask for:

if you have had any close contact with anyone other than members of your household. We are interested in in the 48 hours before you developed symptoms and the time since you developed symptoms.

Close contact means:

  • having face-to-face contact with someone less than 1 metre away (this will include times where you have worn a face covering or a face mask)
  • spending more than 15 minutes within 2 metres of someone
  • travelling in a car or other small vehicle with someone (even on a short journey) or close to them on a plane

We did try to keep our distance and for the majority of the time we were outside however we did get a coffee and at that point we were probably only 1.5 meters away. But like I say it was 13 days ago.

You are absolutely at no risk. Your incubation period has passed.

Okay. But what if my friend was asymptomatic? She may have passed to her son and husband and in that case me and my son too?

dementedpixie · 06/10/2020 21:26

Why are you so keen to isolate? Don't you think you would have symptoms by now if that was the case?

@dementedpixie

I’m not “keen” to isolate.

My son is at nursery and I go to work. I don’t want to go to work and pass anything on to somome!

There are no guarantees, it's just about possible that she was asymptomatic and gave it to you, and you are asymptomatic.

However, that means absolutely anyone could be asymptomatic, so we all need to self isolate.

We have to go with probability rather than possibility, otherwise no one could go out.

You don't need to do anything unless you develop symptoms.

pandafunfactory · 06/10/2020 21:43

You're fine op. You may have asymptomatic Covid but not from your friend.
Let it go.
