Ds has been snotty and sneezy but is ok. It's his second virus since term started. I took his temperature to check he's not running a fever (he's not) and dd took her own and wouldn't tell me what is was. The last reading was 37.8 so I took it myself and yes her temp is 37.8. This is the magic number according to school although I know the NHS and government guidelines don't put an actual number on the fever. She feels hot but is well in herself. She's 13.
We are in Greater Manchester under local restrictions with rates increasing by scary amounts.
I am admittedly over cautious because I'm extremely clinically vulnerable but WWYD? There's two confirmed cases at her school, one teacher and one student in separate years.

I know it's tough but it does sound like she could, potentially have it and you need to follow the rules. Thanks

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 06/10/2020 19:47

Take it again at bedtime and then in the morning. Hopefully it will come down as it is only a teeny bit high currently.

If still 37.8, or rises, then yes you’ll have to isolate until you can get her tested.

Jrobhatch29 · 06/10/2020 19:48

I wouldn't give any paracetamol or anything and take it again in a few hours, or even in the morning. If it's the same or higher then I would get a test.

SistemaAddict · 06/10/2020 21:48

This term is shit. They weren't even back a full week when ds and I fell ill and there were no tests. They have had one full week in school so far. One! I knew it might be like this but I didn't expect it to start the first week back. I was ill for 3 weeks with a chest infection courtesy of the virus ds picked up at school and gave me.
Please can we all fast forward to next summer?

You have to quarantine, without question, yes. Flowers

RepeatSwan · 07/10/2020 07:44

@SchrodingersUnicorn

You have to quarantine, without question, yes. Flowers
This, I know it is hard, crap, horrible, frustrating and worrying but yes, you must treat this as possible covid and isolate until either negative test or the time limit is up.

You've had lots of flowers already so I shall send Cake

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/symptoms/

The nhs clearly says “feels hot” so yes you do need to isolate. That is a low grade fever.

SistemaAddict · 07/10/2020 08:06

School have said they are happy to have her in! Crazy. Her temp is down this morning but still.

SistemaAddict · 07/10/2020 08:17

Ds's school also happy to have him in. Dds' school already have 3 year groups isolating. No wonder.

RepeatSwan · 07/10/2020 08:22

I don't know what to say, that school clearly does not care about either pupils or staff.

I can not understand wtf is going on.

A child with a temperature needs a test.

Youngatheart00 · 07/10/2020 08:25

With the rates as they are where you live it would be totally unsurprising if she has it. You really must self isolate. It’s not about you, it’s about wider society. I know it’s a pain but without people taking these tough decisions we will never reduce these local spikes

ssd · 07/10/2020 08:28

Why are they happy to have her in, did you tell them her temperature?

SistemaAddict · 07/10/2020 08:36

Yes I told them her temperature reading. They are subject to a court order and I've been accused of fabricating illness by their abusive dad so that's why I wanted school to confirm either way. School will take her temperature when she gets there.

OP posts:
pastandpresent · 07/10/2020 08:38

Covid or not, she has high temp, meaning she has some infection. I would think it's irresponsible to send a child in.

MJMG2015 · 07/10/2020 08:41

That's madness

I hope, inconvenient though it is, that they send her home when she gets there. Preferably with a home test kit

She has a temperature, she needs a test.

Seeline · 07/10/2020 08:59

She shouldn't be in school with a temp like that anyway!

But yes - all isolate and get a test. No wonder it's spreading like that if all the schools are taking the same approach in your area.

SistemaAddict · 07/10/2020 09:14

I agree. I'm happy for her to be sent home and I'm happy to isolate but when school say it's ok and dad is like he is then it puts me in a very difficult position especially as she is well in herself.

RepeatSwan · 07/10/2020 09:26

I think your update puts a very personal slant on this, so I guess you have to go with what school says.

SistemaAddict · 07/10/2020 09:39

She's being sent home 🙄

SistemaAddict · 07/10/2020 11:55

As a parent who is extremely clinically vulnerable I'm pretty pissed off that they are allowing kids in school that could be infectious.

OP posts:
RepeatSwan · 07/10/2020 12:00

I think you are right to be upset. If be tempted to write for clarification of why they are doing things that way.

I hope everyone is well soon.

Keepdistance · 07/10/2020 12:15

Sympathy op.
My dc1 has already had 1 test and weve all had 2w off because testing all of us one by one would be ridiculous.
Her classmate was sent home yesterday for coughing in class in he morning. So probably shouldn't have been in at all.
So im anticipating another illness. But dc2 already missed first rainbows and will miss one again this week if ill it's only monthly. And ive got a flu jab this week im trying to hold on for.

I think it is an issue that maybe kids only have symptoms for a few hours and whilst it seems clear to test im sure lots would send in if they seem better. My dc temp lasted a few hours (not covid) i bet 99% would have sent her in monday.

But anyway i dont think it's q good idea to get covid on top of whatever is wrong.
Also contributing is that kids dont get any work if off without the positive test.
I actually think this scenario of repeated illness (especially with 0 measures in schools) is the foremost reason we should be allowed to home learn. Most families dont want to SI every 2-3w!! Plus dc1 actually did go back behind which is bad as she was fine in sept as we had been doing the work.
It just doesnt work if your family is prone to covid symptoms.
