The new anti covid treatment recipe?

Trump has so far received 8g of an antibody cocktail called REGN-COV2 within hours of diagnosis. He is now on remdevisir and zinc, vitamin D, an antacid, melatonin and aspirin. These were all started with 24 hours of diagnosis as far as I can tell.

Should everyone in their 70s be treated this way?

@OhYouBadBadKitten
Some studies have indicated it can help the immune system. I think it possibly has anti-inflammatory effects too. Then again perhaps it's simply for sleep. Sleep plays a vital role in healing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/10/2020 19:43

Thats interesting! I'll have to read some more. Thanks.

Actually, I think my earlier comment re compassionate use of remdesivir is out of date! Early on in the pandemic it was used this way. There is now some evidence that it shortens the course of the illness so I believe it has been approved in the UK to treat covid, but only for select patients who are most likely to benefit. This is because the US administration has bought up almost the entire stock and so it is in very short supply elsewhere.

@GwendolineMarysLaces

I guess we use Dexamethasone instead now?

I think as well as in some cases.

Orangeblossom7777 · 03/10/2020 21:24

There is also a kind of inhaled steroid which is meant to be very good early on...can't remember the name though.

SheepandCow · 03/10/2020 21:45

@Orangeblossom7777
Interferon beta?

I wonder what's happening with it. It apparently showed a lot of promise. That was a couple of months ago. Things might've changed or perhaps it's just slow in development - including manufacturing doses?

I think it was taken out of the recovery trial as initial promising results didn't come to anything. I think.

GwendolineMarysLaces · 03/10/2020 22:15

Although I may be getting mixed up with something else. Not doing too well tonight Grin

SheepandCow · 03/10/2020 22:18

Ah sorry. I cross posted.
It's hard to keep up with the various trials and treatments isn't it!

GwendolineMarysLaces · 03/10/2020 22:29

It is. My work has to write about what is being tested but in a slightly abstract context and I completely lose track of what is going on!

Keepdistance · 03/10/2020 22:33

Vitamin d inhivits melatonin production.
I know because i have insomnia and may have finally worked out the cause!
So melatonin would help that

FromEden · 03/10/2020 22:37

High doses of melatonin have been shown to be effective against covid in some studies. Some hospitals here are using it routinely as treatments, along with vitamin d and zinc.

MushMonster · 03/10/2020 22:43

We should all get some vitamin D and zinc. And good rest.
I hope these new drugs work znd they make to us pronto.

CoffeeandCroissant · 03/10/2020 22:58

There is a list of treatments here:

Orangeblossom7777 · 04/10/2020 16:55

Yes it was interferon beta. Thought it sounded promising. I randomly have some melatonin for insomnia. You can't get it here in the UK, but can get it from the USA...
