Great article, thanks

Cornettoninja · 02/10/2020 13:14

Thanks for that @Forgetmenot157. Every bit of positive news about the vaccine gives me a boost Smile

This particularly as I have family in Birmingham who aren’t in any favourable groups health/age wise so anything that might impact the spread there is very welcome news.

I thought it would take a year or so but we can't keep having lockdowns until then so wonder what the plans are ?

Buckwheat80 · 02/10/2020 13:32

Some light at the end of the tunnel maybe. Thanks for sharing.

PuzzledObserver · 02/10/2020 13:51

This only relates to part of the West Midlands.... but I doubt the early rollout would be limited to there.

AstraZeneca were due to have 30 million doses, enough for 15 million people, by September, so these should already exist. I would have thought that would be enough for the highest priority people nationwide.

Nice to see some positive news. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks op.

My friend works for a ccg and they have got training courses later in this month to teach how to give vaccinations - it's mostly for those whose clinical practice credentials have lapsed such as nurses who have quit but also pharmacists, vets, care workers, drs receptionists, and some are doing a two day course who have no prior experience. They have been told to be ready for the beginning of November though that's likely to slip in his opinion, do remember that there's a priority order so don't expect it soon if you are under 50 and don't work in healthcare

rubbishatballet · 02/10/2020 14:42

I have posted about this on other threads over the last couple of weeks, but we have also had similar instructions (not Birmingham).

@movingonup20, I’m trying to keep realistic!

I’ve seen reports that the AstraZeneca one reduces the illness suffered but I’m not entirely clear on the effect it has on how contagious someone is. Any known factor contributing to a reduction in spread had to be a positive for society overall.

That’s not technically true. No one knows the outcome of the phase 3 trial yet. You are getting mixed up with the safety trial with monkeys. They found traces of virus in the monkey’s nostrils but that is more likely to be just because they absolutely flooded the monkeys with virus, into every orrifice. Very different to how a human would actually acquire it. Therefore no conclusions can be drawn from this at all.

Fair enough @Worriedmum999. Fully accept that my understanding is flawed - this is a pitfall of such intense scrutiny on a scientific process most of us take no notice of in our day to day life normally.

Happy to be corrected!
