Plans to roll out vaccine in West Midlands from as early as next month.

Surprised to hear this on BBC's Midlands news this morning. Two vaccines from different companies codenamed 'Ambush' and 'Triumph'.

I'm not too impressed that one of the vaccines, Triumph, is the AstraZeneca one the US are reportedly looking into further into whether any of their other vaccines have affected the spine (as happened to one of the people on the trial).

Isn't this just contingency planning though? I mean, I'd love to believe there will be a vaccine up and running within weeks, but it's it more likely that this is a plan for what MIGHT happen in this hypothetical scenario?

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 02/10/2020 08:57

The way it was reported on TV suggested otherwise.

There is no fully tested vaccine currently.

That's more of a concern - that a vaccine which hasn't been fully tested will be rolled out.

Is it possible that these two companies' vaccines are going to receive temporary licence authorisations following the end of the consultation last month regarding that?

The way it was reported on TV suggested otherwise. That's what they do. Suggest. The whole article has nothing in it other than how things are planned for and expectations. No actual dates/facts. And it's a 'leaked document' saying doctors have been told to plan - well, of course they have been told to plan.

There's nothing firm in this report at all.

This was on Birmingham Live yesterday.
I take it with a pinch of salt.

I think they are referring to the updated prioritisation list that was updated last week rather than a 'leaked document'. PHE would have told local CCGs to prepare for mass vaccination for when a vaccine is ready. I think we could be seeing some vaccinations this year, probably right at the end of the year, but we are not there yet with a fully tested vaccine as yet. We were due some update Sept/Oct, so I'm hopeful we will hear some good news fairly soon.
