Can you test positive after 2 weeks? Any scientists around?

Could someone with flu symptoms who went on to notice loss of taste or smell two weeks later still test positive? Or is the test really only effective in first 5 days?

Obviously it is not known 100% that the two sets of symptoms are part of the same virus but assuming they are, could active virus still be present?
TIA

So as not to drop feed, there was also a cough and a negative test result during first 5 days but we suspect a false negative. Trying to decide if second test if indicated.

It's more likely that you have 2 separate infections.

Yes a second test is warranted based on new symptoms.

BeakyWinder · 02/10/2020 07:37

You can get a second test for the new symptom so do that?

CovidAgain · 02/10/2020 07:45

Okay I accept that a second test is warranted but IF it’s one and the same virus ( I think it is because of the cough and burning lungs and the fact that the first symptoms are still niggling -phlegm etc) then would the virus still show up after this length of time?

Nobody can tell you how your body is processing this specific virus surely? Just get a test Smile

MRex · 02/10/2020 08:32

Maybe and maybe not. If you're still coming up with new symptoms then probably yes. More likely it's two different infections.

CovidAgain · 02/10/2020 08:32

Sorry Beaky, I’m not expecting a psychic to comment lol.

Perhaps I should have written COULD the virus theoretically still be detectable after 2 weeks.

(Though the first wouldn't have been flu, most likely a rhinovirus, there's been a lot of it about.)
