Hi my hubby has had the virus since Sunday. His symptoms are improving apart from the continued cough he has, it’s relentless, his pulled his back from it. Can anyone suggest any cough medicines that’s helped anyone.

Robitussin for Dry Coughs - it's the bees knees. I had a terrible relentless cough (not Corona - well maybe but it was December) and it really helped.
DH got at at Sainsbury's Pharmacy but they sell it everywhere.

I found sitting with a towel over my head and a basin of hot water under the towel gave some temporary relief.

Oh gosh, there was a breathing exercise doing the rounds some time ago from an NHS worker. Hang on, I'll try and stealthily find it without having the video wake the house.

I think it's this one:

@ArcheryAnnie @FourPlasticRings thank you both so much for your advice. I’ve just got a friend to drop syrup off and we are going to try those breathing techniques too. The coughing is absolutely horrible.Take care both of you!

My GP friend said breathe in really deep for as long as possible and on 6th breath try and do a huge cough to clear out lungs!

FrankiesKnuckle · 02/10/2020 12:48

Codeine linctus. It really suppresses the urge to cough.
OTC I think or maybe script only.

Ginfordinner · 02/10/2020 12:49

Is suppressing the cough a good idea?

FrankiesKnuckle · 02/10/2020 13:06

Suppressing the urge to cough is not a bad thing, especially if it is causing strain on the intercostal muscles or keeping one awake at night.
You can still cough to clear mucus/ phlegm (even though the covid cough is non productive)
It will not make a viral or bacterial infection any worse by suppression, it is for comfort.

BlackInk · 02/10/2020 16:34

Stay really, really well hydrated! Warm drinks especially to help loosen the mucus (Covid produces really thick mucus in the lungs which is hard to shift). Keep moving even if you just feel like lying in bed, with regular walking around and stretching. I don't know whether these things relieve the cough as such but certainly reported by scientists to reduce the risk of breathing problems.

That's why I asked if suppressing a cough was a good idea. Although, I can totally understand why you would want to do so at night.

Cornettoninja · 02/10/2020 17:27

I know in hospitals they’ve encouraged people to lie on their fronts as there’s less pressure on the lungs that way so he may find some relief with that at night.

Have you been given any advice? I wonder if there’s anything the GP could prescribe (I’m thinking inhalers but I’ve no idea if that’s suitable for covid)

ArcheryAnnie · 06/10/2020 09:00

If you are congested (I was) then deep huffing is more effective than coughing at clearing the lungs.

(And yes, lying on your front to sleep really helps.)
