Self isolating is worse than lock down

Dh tested positive last week, we are all self isolating
Can't leave the house, thank god we have a garden to sit in when it's dry
Can't go a walk
It's fucking dementing

During lock down I walked every day for my mental health, but can't when self isolating as per the guidelines.

I'm finding it hard. I can't imagine this with a couple of kids in a flat Sad

@PickAChew

It wouod drive me bonkers.

I was scrolling through the M&S Christmas food to order, today and it occurred to me that no way would I risk paying the deposit in case we had to self isolate at that time.

They may do delivery. Don’t you have anyone who could pick up and leave at your door for you though?
Keepgoing88 · 01/10/2020 20:10

Not much to say other than been through it and 100000% agree!

PickAChew · 01/10/2020 20:15

That's the thing, @cardibach. We don't. And they don't. There's ocado but I can't rely on getting a slot. I think it will be a lot more sensible for us to have the bones of Christmas dinner already in the freezer, this year.

cardibach · 01/10/2020 20:32

They don’t now, @PickAChew, but if it looks as though they aren’t getting orders as a result?

ssd · 01/10/2020 20:47

I think it would be a good idea for all of us to gave a few frozen meals in the freezer, just incase this happens out if the blue.

@lljkk

Shielders it's advisory though, I think?

Shielder can go for a walk if they choose.
Self-isolaters are not legally allowed out, not even a countryside walk at 1am.

It's different.

Well, yes it is different. This self isolating will hopefully be over for us within a short time, sheilders may not be so lucky.

We had quarantine for 2 weeks after going away. I think it’s important you get some exercise (online YouTube videos or whatever) every day. (Once I went for a run round and round the garden. It’s not a big garden. I felt like a right wally).

Make sure you have some treats to look forward to (nice food delivered, or buy yourself a present).

If it’s at all your thing then meditation can help you stay calm.

Just try to look after your emotional well being. It’s very stressful being cooped up.

thecatsatonthewall · 01/10/2020 20:58

Agree and it's why i haven't downloaded the app, mentally and financially i cannot self isolate because some random i was nr is a cv positive but i am not.

LizzieMacQueen · 01/10/2020 21:30

Curious to know @ssd , where does he think he picked it up from?

PlonkItDownNOW · 01/10/2020 21:53

Currently doing it in a 500sq flat with DH, 4 yo DS and me. No garden. It's fine actually.

Maryann1975 · 01/10/2020 21:58

We had to isolate for just under 30 hours two weeks ago. I had no where I needed to go and had plenty of food and supplies in, so no problems feeding ourselves for that time.
I’m quite happy to stay in at the weekend normally, doesn’t bother me to have a quiet day in front of the tv, pottering around the house, but Because we couldn’t go out, it made me want to go out all the more. It was awful. I’m dreading if we have to isolate for 2 weeks or longer and have so much sympathy for those living in flats with no outside space or those in overcrowded accommodation.

ssd · 03/10/2020 07:26

@LizzieMacQueen, he had a day out in a pub in Glasgow with a pal a few days before symptoms started, we reckon there.
It's his first day out like that, in a pub, since March. He used hand gel throughout and sat in a booth. And wore his mask when not at the table.

Our 14 days finishes tomorrow. It has been tedious beyond belief and far worse than lockdown. DFIL shielded until August and was quite happy pottering - doesn’t live with us. DS16 tested positive and was back at school when his 10 days were up. Apart from one short period of temp when we booked the test he was fine. DH and I both fine but stir crazy.

ssd · 03/10/2020 09:10

And it's the self isolating in a small house, keeping away from each other, cleaning all the bloody time incase it spreads, cooking separately, all in a tiny house without being able to even go a walk that's really hard.

DS did it after a positive case at school.

For a healthy 14 year old who loves outdoors and school it was a long slog. This could be a repeated cycle as multiple cases at his secondary and his sibling's secondary.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 03/10/2020 09:26

@ssd I hope you all cope ok.
Also thank you for considering how tough it had been for peple shielding. Yes it was voluntary and yes after the first few months you could go for a walk.
However if you 49 year old husband could get very ill with COVID you have little choice as I would want my 3 kids to lose their dad. Now we are very grateful to be in low transmission area as kids back at school.

minnimiss · 03/10/2020 09:30

Yes I agree! We are isolating too. 1 week left! It's hard going, much harder than lock down. I can't wait to be able to just pop to the shops or do something normal!

NotAKaren · 03/10/2020 09:54

Think of the students stuck far away from home in a university halls room. It is really tough OP and you can see why not everyone actually adheres to it.

AlwaysLatte · 03/10/2020 10:03

We only had to do it for 4 days, thankfully and it was worse than lockdown, as everyone else is able up go out which makes it worse! We got lots of jobs that we rarely find time for around the house and garden, like washing the walls down, etc. But it was a tiny taster of what shielders have been going through. This is why we all need to follow the rules.

AlwaysLatte · 03/10/2020 10:07

I'm going to have an emergency Christmas dinner in the freezer, just in case. I'll do our usual Tesco online order and turkey from the butcher, but I'll put a turkey crown in the freezer from Iceland or somewhere, frozen desserts that sort of thing. Then if we don't use it we'll have it at new year instead!
