Anybody actively trying to boost immunity?

All the signs show that it is possible to boost immune system actively (diet, exercise, vitamins, meditation and relaxation, sleep etc).

However hardly anyone in my social group cares about this. They are all worried about COVID but actively tucking into cake, getting drunk, packing on more weight etc.

I was just wondering how many here are actively seeking to help themselves or am I correct there is (in some people) a general belief of Aw well, nothing can be done .... ?

@Ihatemyseleffordoingthis

"given that Covid kills you or causes long term damage because of your immune system working too well"

Can you elaborate?

"Some people’s immune system overreacts to the virus, causing inappropriate inflammation and fluid build-up which can block airways and overwhelm organs such as the kidneys and liver, potentially leading to multi-organ failure. The ability of doctors to manipulate a patient’s immune response with drugs to prevent this sort of extreme reaction may be vital to prevent death from COVID-19 and is a priority for research." www.immunology.org/news/coronavirus-immunology-qa-what-you-need-know-about-our-new-report

The immune system is multi-faceted, and it is the crudest part of it that inflames and causes typical cold/flu symptoms.

Sounds like you have done an amazing job monkeytennis97 - you've lost so much weight in such a short time. Inspiring!

allofthetings · 01/10/2020 19:45

It would be interesting to see in the future if Covid actually saved lives (pre-mature deaths) overall because so many people are on a health kick, losing weight and taking more responsibility for their health.

monkeytennis97 · 01/10/2020 19:55

@AlexaShutUp thank youSmileThanks

@allofthetings

And not catching flu due to social distancing measures.

MyBabyBoyBlue · 01/10/2020 20:37

Yes here, but late to the party. Anxiety overtook in the first 3 months of lockdown and we ate rubbish and drank a lot which resulted in me putting on a fair bit of weight. Have now cut down a lot on meat, eating plenty of veg, cut out sugar and cut down on alcohol. Now just need to find the time to exercise...!!

Worriedmum999 · 01/10/2020 20:44

How did you do it @monkeytennis97? I’m BMI 45 and scared to death. I need to get it down but it’s so hard Sad

HeresMe · 01/10/2020 20:45

Boosting immunity is largely a myth, and given that Covid kills you or causes long term damage because of your immune system working too well, it wouldn't be a good idea if it were actually possible.

What misinformed rubbish.

So it's one or other die or get ill, no it isn't most people will have it and recover fairly quickly.

To the OP it won't make much difference to if you catch or not but being fitter is a good thing.

Stellaris22 · 01/10/2020 20:51

I'm doing longer walks every day (I get bad shin pain if I jog) and taking vitamin c and d. Also eating much healthier, it's the kick I needed to tackle my weight problem as I also have asthma.

BMI is still 39 but I feel fitter than I did.

TheClitterati · 01/10/2020 20:53

I've been swimming in the sea all summer and am still going. Hope to keep going through winter. Shown to boost immunity, reduce anxiety etc.

I'll start taking Vit d again now sunshine has gone.

I drink very little booze anyway.

Could do with losing some weight but find it virtually impossible.

monkeytennis97 · 01/10/2020 20:55

@Worriedmum999 I started by trying to get 10,000 steps in every day... jogging round the house in early lockdown (was too scared to go out), jogging on the spot, wii fit stuff and bought an exercise bike. I was doing a good 2/3/4 hours exercise a day and eating around 1700 cals a day... I lost a stone in the first month and then was losing around 10lbs a month for May-August. Once I got more confident outside I was going for at least an hours walk a day, sometimes 2 hours. Sticking to around 1600-1700 cals every day. Using an app to input my food. It's been harder since physically being back at work since September but I've lost 8lbs this month which is a miracle for me as I normally pile on the weight with comfort eating come September and back to school. I'm hoping to lose another 20-30lbs in total but can't wait for another 3lbs because then I'll be out of the 'obese' BMI for the first time in 23 years!Smile

Too busy taking medication to calm my immune system the fuck down so it doesn't cripple/kill me, thanks.
