Would you have chosen as a PM to lead us through the pandemic? I voted labour but I'm not sure Jeremy Corbin would have done any better. Kier Starmer perhaps. But I keep going back to Rory Stewart and wondering if he would have done a good job. I really liked him at the time.

So, who do you think would have made the best PM through the pandemic?

Thatcher was competent but uncaring.

Which probably isn't ideal in a health pandemic. Let's be right about it, she was a sociopath.

Thatcher's competence wasn't always put to the test well. Galtieri and Scargill (on a war footing where Thatcher excelled) were complete idiots that played into her hands.

Look at the Poll Tax riots on the other hand, a mess entirely of her own making and she completely lost control there. Same with inner city riots of the early 80s due to uncaring policies. The furlough scheme has at least kept things relatively calm and stable compared to how it could have been. Herd immunity in a densely populated country like the UK would have seen people dropping like flies back in March/April when everyone else had shutdown.

True... she was lucky enough in her opposition. Michael Foot, bless his cotton socks, wasn't exactly formidable either. And she certainly lost her touch by the end. I suspect people mean earlier era Thatcher though.

She had a lot of luck early on though. Callaghan was well ahead in the polls in 78 but delayed calling an election and then winter of discontent happens. That got her in government.

Her early years were a disaster. The early 80s recession was brutal, there was large scale riots in the cities and she was on the verge of being pushed out by her own party. Labour/SDP split was a lifeline and Foot being inept.

Then Falklands happens and she emerges as the big hero.
