Full on cold but now I can’t smell anything

So I have what appears to be a full on cold but I didn’t have any of the three symptoms that require testing but as of last night I can’t smell anything. Not even vix vapour rub which I could smell in the morning. I can still taste things. I should be getting tested right?

Now I’m really worried. Baby sleeps in the cosleeper next to my bed and feel like I must have infected the baby by now breathing in the same room as him all these nights :( my 3 DC (including baby) had a cold 2 weeks ago cold with a temperature and tested negative and I just assumed my cold was whatever they had. But the loss of smell has me worried

I’ve not been anywhere expect the school run so I’m assuming I caught whatever it is from my own children or DH who goes to work but wears ppe as he’s an optom but he hasn’t had any symptoms

Yes you need to get a test. It does sound possible that your DC have passed it to you.

But if you are snot filled, it may well just be a cold. The bing bong for covid is the loss of the sense when you are not bunged up/streaming

justanotherneighinparadise · 30/09/2020 05:57

Test!

flissity · 30/09/2020 06:00

Have you got a blocked up nose? That could affect your sense of smell. My DH had complete loss of smell/taste senses but totally clear nose and could breathe normally when he had it.

Lolaloveslemonade · 30/09/2020 06:04

Every cold I have ever had includes a blocked nose. When my nose is blocked I can’t taste or smell.
You can definitely book a test if you want to rule out Corona virus though.

BritInAus · 30/09/2020 06:09

I've lost sense of smell/taste before with really bad colds. I'm talking years ago. The only way you'll know for sure is to get tested.

frozendaisy · 30/09/2020 08:48

We have just had this cold. Started as sneezing, runny nose, child 1 didn't get sent home from school.

I caught it, lost sense of smell at the end can't smell olbas nose stick, all other symptoms gone, think it too late to test accurately, totally convinced not Covid-19 this time. Other two household members didn't catch.

It's not all Covid-19. Smell comes back sporadically.

GinnieHempstock · 30/09/2020 08:52

I’ve got a cold. I’m 95% certain that’s what it is and I’ve caught it from my DC, two of whom had colds a week or so ago.
However, I have a cough and loss of smell (bunged up nose), so I’m SI and have a test booked for this afternoon.

I work for the nhs and back in March we had an outbreak when a staff member came to work with “just a cold”. It’s not worth the risk, however inconvenient and frustrating it is.

thecatneuterer · 30/09/2020 09:19

You haven't said if you have a blocked nose. A cold normally comes with a blocked nose, and a blocked nose means loss of smell/taste. The Covid loss of smell happens even though the nose isn't blocked.

ibruiseeasilysobegentle · 30/09/2020 09:32

I'm full of cold at the minute and lost sense of smell/taste but this happens every time I get cold and my symptoms are no different.

MamaZeee · 30/09/2020 10:02

Thank you all for replying

Yes I have a blocked nose. I woke up feeling much better this morning and my nose is clearer and I could smell again. I’ve kept my little boy off school today as a precaution. Should I still be booking a test/continuing to isolate?

You need to get a test but I always lose my sense of smell and taste at the end of a bad cold so it's highly likely you'll be negative.
But you need to test.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/09/2020 10:04

Sorry cross posted. I wouldn't test. I think a moment of kids smell due to being full of snot that is resolved after some Vic's isn't "lots of smell" per se

unchienandalusia · 30/09/2020 11:32

No do test! Not being able to smell because your nose is blocked is totally different to losing your sense of smell
/ taste.

purpleme12 · 30/09/2020 11:42

Will I wouldn't test if I knew I had a blocked nose because of cold or sneezing all the time because no one can smell through a blocked nose but otherwise I would or if there was any other symptoms

Chickenfingers · 30/09/2020 15:36

Every cold I've had I've lost my sense of taste/smell due to a blocked nose. It absolutely baffles me people are saying to get a test done when common sense has shown it's because of the blocked nose. No wonder there's not enough tests going around for people that actually need it.
If your nose is unblocked and you still can't smell/test only then would I get a test.

Chickenfingers · 30/09/2020 15:36

Smell/taste*

Msmcc1212 · 30/09/2020 16:12

Yes. You have to test (And household isolate) but try not to worry. Might just be a cold. Children tend to fair ok with it so don’t worry about them if you can help it. Look after yourself.

Msmcc1212 · 30/09/2020 16:15

Scrap that. I just noticed you can smell again now. Grin
