What’s going to happen to ‘the North’?

Napqueen1234 · 28/09/2020 14:09

I say ‘the north’ as I’m well aware it’s hugely varied (Am a northerner myself) but for arguments sake we will bung it all together.

In ‘local lockdown’ for weeks now but numbers still climbing. Other areas going into lockdown/increased restrictions whatever you prefer at a fast rate. The north on the whole seems much more affected than the south.

What will they do next? Surely they can’t enforce a ‘proper’ lockdown for just the north? Or just close northern schools? FWIW none of this has been mentioned but if numbers continue to rise surely more action is needed. I completely understand if you’re in a v low case area the idea of a national lockdown would be infuriating but can you ‘lockdown’ a huge part of the country?

Will it create a further divide and stigmatise the north generally? Will house prices plummet even in nice areas as no one wants to move if theyre likely to be severely restricted?

I know I sound a bit hysterical and I’m not trying to scare monger I just genuinely don’t know what the next steps are going to be for us up here (NW, rates >200/100,000 and rising). Not only that but the idea of us having all bars and restaurants closed and not allowed to see any other families/households when other parts of the country now makes me feel very envious and depressed.

Not me -I must say I found it odd that it was so low in the NE!

notangelinajolie · 28/09/2020 17:10

Northerner here. We have been in local lockdown for a while - can't say I've noticed anything different Confused

Biancadelrioisback · 28/09/2020 17:13

Im up in Northumberland where our rates a low but we're still lumped in with the other north east areas and under restrictions.
I don't know what's going to happen but putting areas with low rates under 'restrictions' is just hurting the local businesses. It's not like it's a highly populated place for businesses to try again when things calm down, it's pretty much all or nothing at the moment.

Places with higher rates, well I still don't think they are looking at those areas properly, why and where are contacts happening? Just imposing the curfew and stopping us seeing family...I mean, are these the reasons the rates rocketed?

starrynight19 · 28/09/2020 17:17

I am in an area with high cases and local lockdown. It’s not really any different.
Schools are spreading the virus rapidly here. They are jo talking of closing pubs etc for two weeks.
What’s the point if schools stay open.
As of 25th Sept phe said that the biggest contributors was primary schools

What’s going to happen to ‘the North’?
Napqueen1234 · 28/09/2020 17:25

It’s so hard though isn’t it as a parent of primary age children we are all living in a state of extraordinary anxiety that the bubbles will hurts toe they will close schools having a huge impact on our children’s education and our ability to work. It will be even more depressing and anxiety providing if it’s only a small area experiencing this.

They are on about further restrictions such as closing pubs etc, keeping schools open though. Not sure if that will happen though..

annabel85 · 28/09/2020 17:34

I'm in an area in the north with restrictions and cases rising. For health purposes they should shut all the pubs and restaurants for October in the areas affected, but the businesses need financial support.

cathyandclare · 28/09/2020 17:47

I understand that for the South East Batshite- but I'm pretty sure Devon, Cornwall. Gloucester and Bristol had very little infection last time, despite DD telling me that it was a free-for-all in the pubs and clubs in Bristol the days before lockdown. maybe they're just made of stronger stuff than us northerners!!!

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 17:48

This was what I saw today, in the Times.

Ministers are preparing to enforce a total social lockdown across much of northern Britain and potentially London to combat a spiralling second wave of coronavirus.

Under the new emergency plan, all pubs, restaurants and bars would be ordered to shut for two weeks initially. Households would be banned indefinitely from meeting each other in any indoor location where they were not already under the order. Schools would stay open as well as shops, factories and offices at which staff could not work from home.

Hmm maybe. Maybe its just luck. Maybe theres a reason, or maybe they are just more likely to either not get it, or get it without symptoms so therefor not test.

Either way, I hope it stays that way. And hope everyrwhere else manages to get numbers down soon too.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 17:50

I'm in the SW in an area with many commuters from London- lots of us got ill before the lockdown but not tested, including our family after going skiing- but not many cases recorded. Not sure if that makes any difference. Cases seem quite low now

BBCONEANDTWO · 28/09/2020 17:58

Can someone let me know - if you're in one of the local restricted areas in the North - are you still allowed a support bubble?

starrynight19 · 28/09/2020 18:07

Yes you can still have a support bubble

PrettyCherryBlossom · 28/09/2020 18:10

Guidance about not mixing households in any setting is to become law in the North East from Wednesday :

Janedownourlane · 28/09/2020 18:26

Describing this as the 'North East' is misleading though as all of Teeside & North Yorkshire are the North East too, but this doesnt apply to them.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 18:31

Liverpool seems to be the one with main rises, many school cases I saw in the news..

Racoonworld · 28/09/2020 19:05

Just announced that mixing of households will be Against the law from Wednesday in the north east of England. Hopefully this will help stop cases rising!

I wonder if this will include 'support bubbles'

This will not stop the cases rising tbh. Nothing will, while we ignore that the main spread is in schools and work..
MrsGrindah · 28/09/2020 19:13

I am so disappointed with how many people are just ignoring it ( I’m in Leeds) . It’s only making it worse for everyone else. And it’s not just “ young “ people but people who should know better. So many people saying “ well I’m entitled to see my family “ etc etc. knowing full well that they’ll get away with it. I’m very upset with some of my friends and family members attitudes.

No, it’s only guidance at the moment. From what I have read it seems like support bubbles are ok.

It was advised not to, it wasn't the law before. It hasn't yet been confirmed if support bubbles are included or not.
BatShite · 28/09/2020 19:26

Oh right, thought all the 'guidance' changed to law a week or so ago! So we have been assuming its law already. Won't make much difference to us, unless support bubbles are no longer allowed, then MIL is in for a shitty time..
