Why do those most opposed to lockdown seem most likely to behave in a way that lead to one!....

.... It makes no sense!

I really don’t want another lockdown, and would only support one if things were truly getting dire, but I’m frustrated at those who simultaneously think lockdown would be a disaster and then behave in ways that make it more likely. Madness!

Ugh, completely agree OP. Infuriating!

Gingerkittykat · 27/09/2020 23:56

They generally believe Covid is no more than a cold so why would they worry about catching it?

MaxinesTaxi · 27/09/2020 23:58

In what ways do you mean exactly?

Derbygerbil · 28/09/2020 06:46

In what ways do you mean exactly?

I mean disregarding rules such as wearing face coverings in shops/buses (I’m talking about non-exempt people) and generally disregarding any social distancing measures. Those places where people show most disdain for the rules are those places now with most restrictions!

I think that's an unfair generalisation tbh. I'm in local lockdown and everyone I know is following the rules. Yes there are some idiots but there are everywhere. What I have noticed however is that I only know two people who are working from home and everyone else is out of the house for work.
PermanentMarkerSniffer · 28/09/2020 07:25

I agree, but some people don't see an end to it and presumably just think "f* it".

I personally think we can have a happy medium with shops, pubs, restaurants and theatres open doing some sort of trade. However, it does require everyone to be sensible.

PrivateD00r · 28/09/2020 07:28

Literally no one is complying with restrictions in my area. I go in to peoples houses as part of my job, and every single house I go into has visitors, no exaggeration.

022828MAN · 28/09/2020 07:34

I don't think it's one or the other. I don't agree with lock downs but I'm still wearing face masks etc in shops.

MaxinesTaxi · 28/09/2020 07:56

Hmm ok - I think that there are going to be varying ideas of what “behaving in a way most likely to lead to one” means. Eg I am very against another lockdown and I send my son to nursery despite the fact that I am on maternity leave so strictly speaking don’t “need” childcare. I am obviously increasing the risk of coronavirus spreading, but prior to this it was generally accepted on MN that if a family needed to send the older child to childcare for everyone’s wellbeing then it was fine. I don’t know where your personal “you are taking unnecessary risks” parameters lie. I don’t live in a local lockdown area

Northernsoulgirl45 · 28/09/2020 07:56

Absolutely op. I have a relative with no medical conditions who believes it is a scam but claims to be medically exempt from wearing a mask. I am definitely not aware of any medical conditions. Also sharing shit about how you can sue for discrimination if asked to mask up thus encouraging others not to wear.

CrunchyNutNC · 28/09/2020 08:04

For me this group comprises it's those who seek to have the rules scrapped, or find loopholes to get out of compliance.

Some seem to be very short on thinking skills. "The lockdown didn't work because only x people died." Hmm

I find it quite depressing and hope that MN has a disproportionate number of these people. However given the number who voted for Brexit which was another example of blindness to logic, I'm not so sure.

Stellaris22 · 28/09/2020 08:08

Absolutely agree OP.

I work in food retail and having to explain to some people why they have to wait outside is infuriating. I've had to state that it's because of a pandemic which i shouldn't have to explain.

It's definitely the people loudly complaining about lockdowns who will cause it by not following basic rules.

Remmy123 · 28/09/2020 08:14

Not at all - I oppose a lockdown because I am more worried about the knock on effect it has. Plus it's not necessary right now.

But I follow the roles .. even tho I think most of the rules are bollox (pubs shutting at 10 etc)

MaxinesTaxi · 28/09/2020 08:25

“ It's definitely the people loudly complaining about lockdowns who will cause it by not following basic rules.”

I don’t think this is true - it’s far too simplistic when rises in cases have come with people doing things they are legitimately allowed to do as public places and schools and workplaces have opened up

Lockdown is a choice by government - we can debate about when and how and why it might be needed, but it shouldn’t be seen as the inevitable only option. A second lockdown is failure by government to take advantage of the time granted to them by the first one - by people generously sacrificing a lot so that they had time to shore up a health service stripped to the bone. They didn’t use that time well.

I know people are illogical and don’t behave how we would like them to, and they are rude and abusive when they should be understanding. But blaming individuals for virus transmission like this is not helping

Missingsockswheresotheygo · 28/09/2020 08:37

I don't think this is necessarily true op.

I'm opposed to another lockdown, we are severely limiting our social activities. We aren't visiting anyone. In local lockdown but wouldn't anyway. Not bothering with eating out which we used to do. I've got dc in school so I don't want to risk picking anything up and sending it into school.

In my circle I've noticed the opposite. People who enjoyed lockdown and had a nice rest seem to be doing lots of risky activities.
