Im sooo upset that students have been forced to sign up to tendency agreements for a year to now find out from uni (who has now only just given out the timetables) that all classes are now online . So they could have studied from home where they have family support at this difficult time! Now they will have £1000's of pounds of debt unnecessarily . Im angry that the uni gave out timetables so late . The worry of the debt , the loneliness away from family and stress of this will impact on the kids and families for a long time .....v poor ! These tenency agreements and uni fees need to be looked at now

Problem is that those traditional student type jobs you’ve mentioned are now in very short supply and where there are vacancies they are having huge numbers apply

Retail is dead, hospitality is dead, leisure is dead

There are no jobs in any meaningful numbers[/quote]
It must depend on where you live. Plenty of "student type" jobs being advertised around here, all in hospitality or retail. So no, those industries clearly aren't "dead".

The first page of Indeed shows the following jobs available:

Customer assistant at Co-op.
Admin assistant for a local holiday park.
Waitress in a bar.
Receptionist at a pub/hotel.
Waitress at a hotel.
Front of house/waitressing at another hotel.
Supermarket assistant.
Hotel receptionist.
Housekeeping.
Waitress.
Barista at a coffee chain.
Kitchen porter.
Assistant in an art gallery.
Sales assistant in a clothing shop.
Retail assistant in another clothing shop.

And that's only on page one!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/09/2020 18:15

Where are you vanilla?

bigchris · 27/09/2020 18:15

Plenty of jobs have been advertised around here that would be ideal for students

If they are studying though they are students and hundreds of applicants are after those jobs

Peolle are being laid off left right and centre

18 year olds straight from school are hardly goimg to be given these jobs above experienced retail and waiting staff who have been laid off who will take minimum wage as there is no other option

bigchris · 27/09/2020 18:16

Sorry if they AREN'T studying they aren't students that should say

Yes, but you don't know how many hundreds each application gets from looking at a list of jobs.

Bold fail.

LindainLockdown · 27/09/2020 18:24

My DS was told 90% online for this semester at least before going but was still very happy to go after 6 months at home and losing his part time hospitality job.

He is doing OK so far and still would far prefer to be at university and trying to get on with his life despite the current, overall shit, situation.

So not all students are the same, some are still happy to be given the chance to start uni life away from home where there are no jobs to be had, no travel opportunities etc.

TheDrsDocMartens · 27/09/2020 18:29

I applied for loads of low level jobs recently as my work isn’t up snd running properly yet. Hundreds of people applying for jobs.
Xmas supermarket ones starting to come in but still not many around.

caringcarer · 27/09/2020 18:40

Supermarket looking for both overnight warehouse shifts X3 and day time staff x2 here. I think supermarkets are trying to get extra staff in case some of there staff off isolating and Xmas coming. Be honest who doesn't like a few extra eat treats if we get into another lockdown?

@ThroughThickAndThin01

Where are you vanilla?
Cumbria, but outside of the National Park.
cinammonbuns · 27/09/2020 19:03

@vanillandhoney do you know how many hundred of people will have applied for each of those jobs.

Gosh I wish people who don’t have a clue would just keep their mouths shut.

vanillandhoney · 27/09/2020 19:04

That's true, but people are saying nobody's hiring and that there are no jobs because everyone is getting made redundant and industries are dead, which is clearly not the case everywhere.

There are jobs. They might not be what people want to do, but they do exist, and many of them are ideal for young people with no other commitments. I suspect many people just don't want to work antisocial hours though.

There's no need to be rude, is there? Everyone else has managed to have a discussion without telling those who disagree with them to keep their mouths shut Hmm

It's a valid comment that there are jobs there. People have commented on here saying there are no jobs and that whole industries are just dead and making everyone redundant - that's clearly not the case everywhere.

I obviously don't know how many applicants, and that is a valid point, but you can get it across without being unpleasant.

TW2013 · 27/09/2020 19:09

They could have used all the spare accommodation to enable people to properly quarantine when testing positive if they don't have their own property or when returning from abroad. Students could have stayed at home.

littlealexhorne · 27/09/2020 19:21

I agree that the accomodation situation is awful, and I do think especially where a university has promised face to face teaching which now isn't happening, they should give students the option to end their contracts and leave, like many did in March. Some might prefer to stay and that's fine, but I'm sure some students must be feeling very isolated right now, and would be better off back at home with their families. This would though only work for students in university owned accomodation, for anyone in private accomodation (so most 2nd and 3rd years) I'm not sure anything could be done there.

As for tutition fees, I don't think they can or should be reduced or refunded. In a lot of cases, its more expensive to run the courses online, and many university libraries have spend a fortune gaining access to ebooks. Plus of course the government have said they won't help to subsidise universities and allow them to drop fees, so it simply wouldn't be financially substainable for many.

It will obviously vary with regions but there are jobs. My DD is constantly recruiting for on average 20+ warehouse staff at the moment and I can assure you she’d be delighted to hire a load of enthusiastic young people who would have been heading off to university.

Really? Normally employers say that British students are lazy and won't employ them.

Flamingosarentreal · 27/09/2020 19:41

Private lease for niece was signed in December for her second year. No refund option after initial cooling off period .
Timetable sent three weeks ago said face to face lectures 3 times per week.
Email update after Boris' announcement on Tuesday said all online.
She had already left for Uni before the update
