How long to self isolate to have contact with someone who is higher risk?

'My parents are in there 70's, good health but my dad has a condition which could make him more vulnerable. They live a number of hours away although with them visiting us and our travel to them we normally see them every other month.

We have seen them once last Christmas and once this summer. Ahead of the Summer visit we self isolated for ten days.

They desperately want to see us and we them. We have their only grandchildren who are all 6 and under.

Assuming neither they are us are in a lockdown area at the time and all are well, and we are allowed to visit (party of 6 rule doesn't apply to kids where they live), I think we should self isolate for 14 days before hand to be safe ? I can't find any guidance on this (not sure I'd expect any) but I think it must logically follow - ie we should act as if we were exposed.

Does this make sense ? Will make for a very strange two weeks around Christmas but I think it's the safest thing to do, if we want to see them.

Well I have to isolate for two weeks prior to surgery so I assume the same.
