Well that was quicker than expected

School sent my 6yo home Thursday, he's had a cold and a cough related to that cold, but they suddenly decided it was persistent and that neither he or his brother could return to school until negative test.

Spent most of Thursday evening refreshing page, managed to book a test 50mim drive away 11am yesterday. Got there early, it was virtually empty and we were waved in.

Actual testing experience was horrendous, little boy threw up everywhere at the thought of something being put down his throat and was distressed through the whole thing. But we did it.

Got the result email just after 3am (negative as expected).

So 30hrs from being sent home to test result, 18hr from test to result.

This is how it should work, if only it could be the same for everyone

Are you real... or are you a government stooge? (Only kidding, you’re very lucky, my friend waited a week with three kids off school and her out of her front line nursing job)

Estrellente · 26/09/2020 16:33

Yes it’s much better here now too- test slot within 15 hours and (negative) result 20 hours after that.
Fair play to them.

Freshprincess · 26/09/2020 16:34

Depends where you live entirely. We’re in local lockdown and cases are rising. There’s two test centres opened up in the town in the past week.

I’m hearing from people who have had it done that it’s all pretty quick.

Definitely real. I was expecting a much longer wait with all the horror stories and was shocked it came back so fast. I was just hoping result would be here by tomorrow ready for school Monday. If only they could get their fingers out and turn all tests around that fast.

Just to add I'm not in a hotspot area, pretty much the opposite, we have very low numbers.

Yesturday my lo had a high temp and cough, they also had a case in another room at nursery. I looked online at 8.50am and booked a slot for 9.30am 5 miles away. Got the results at 9am this morning (negative) 23.5 hours later.

Puffinhead · 26/09/2020 16:42

My friend managed to book a test same evening and got the results through at 8am next door. So I guess when it works it works.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 26/09/2020 16:48

Similar here - took about 15 minutes on the site to get a test the next morning 45 minutes drive away, and took less than 24 hours for (negative, as I expected) result.
Only downside as far as my teen was concerned was he was expecting much longer off school.

MJMG2015 · 26/09/2020 16:55

It's great to hear some tests coming back quickly!

Hopefully they can follow through on their turn around promises & increase actual capacity.

It'll certainly be game changing if they do!

Our (private) school has started the Halo testing system & that's really helping.

Chewbecca · 26/09/2020 16:57

We got a result at 5:25 am for a test at midday the previous day which exceeded my expectation. (Essex)

OverTheRubicon · 26/09/2020 16:57

School should not have required his brother to be tested, btw - not required, against the guidelines, especially as even if he were to have caught it he might not show up positive yet. It's that kind of wastage that is playing havoc with an already-crap test system.

Not your fault, obviously, but I still think we should all push back on schools that make these requests.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/09/2020 17:01

Did the brother have to have a test or was it he just had to stay off school until the one with symptoms got a negative test result?

ScrapThatThen · 26/09/2020 17:05

This test is very aversive, hope they hurry up and come up with an easier process.

Lindy2 · 26/09/2020 17:06

We've had a result as quick as 13 hours and one that took 60 hours. It is a bit pot luck.

The 13 hours was very impressive. The 60 hours was frustrating. I still think it's pretty good though that tests are available and free. It might not be perfect, particularly with the current increased demand and the booking process taking a while, but it's not the complete shambles that some people like to make out it is.

RepeatSwan · 26/09/2020 17:07

This is good to hear, I remain sceptical (there were none locally today according to a friend who needed one).

It should be like this, we desperately need tests to get an accurate picture of what is happening.

RepeatSwan · 26/09/2020 17:08

I do not think we have to be grateful for free tests, is the least we should expect!!

itsgettingweird · 26/09/2020 17:09

My local drive through in city disappeared over night! Moved 15 mikes away.

According to local media no one new it was happening. It's to make way for an overspill lorry park in event of no deal Brexit.

GreenGoldRed · 26/09/2020 17:09

Good news. I went with my DS today for Drive thru test (developed cough Friday). I am hoping that it comes back quickly and we can have him back to school Monday.

I am worried though because I had to do a test 2 weekends ago and it took 4 days for the results to come in...

Brother had to stay off until 6yo with symptoms had negative

Glad it was negative. That throwing up could have been a superspreading event..

Hardly, it was in the back of a car with all windows shut, and just over me and him. And obviously cleaned up as soon as we got home. It was a reaction to having something stuck down his throat.

We were very lucky with DS test. We managed to get one the same day he started with a temp and cough, only 15min drive away. Results took 34 hours. Thankfully it was negative. He's only just 5 so the test wasn't fun, we were in the back of the car too.

Nellodee · 26/09/2020 18:29

I missed two days of work here - could have been a lot worse.

Keepdistance · 26/09/2020 21:37

That's lucky we had to go to a walkin (incorrectly described as drive through) so i was imagining it going everywhere.

ceeveebee · 26/09/2020 21:41

We had a good experience a couple of weeks ago too, dd developed a cold and slight temperature so i kept her off school, by lunchtime it had got very high so I booked her a test and managed to get 8am the next day, got (negative) results within 36 hours so just the 3 days off, not too bad considering!
