Symptoms and calling in to work

I developed a cough and potential fever (don't have a thermometer) overnight after feeling pretty rubbish yesterday, so contacted my boss this morning. I'm supposed to be working the next three days.

We're a small business, one person working in a public facing role during a shift, and there are only four of us in the business. She said she couldn't cover as she was away and it was up to me what to do. I don't really want to put potentially a hundred or so customers at risk so I stated that, and she's now agreed I shouldn't go in but made me feel pretty guilty about it. I did the right thing though didn't I? I've booked. a test and hopefully it's fine, but I shouldn't be putting people at potential risk just because there's no contingency plan in place for
Sickness?

Oh, I'm also pregnant so quite cautious about Covid anyway.

Youve done the right thing. The govt are very clear on what to do if you have the symptoms that you do.

File any guilt in the bin and rest. Good luck on the results.

It's not your fault the business doesn't have a robust procedure in place for this - the likelihood of this happening to a member of staff is very high.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz thank you! Because it's so small I guess we all feel
Responsible but at the end of the day it's not my business to run. We get a lot of elderly customers and i don't want to put them at risk

She's a dick for not suggesting straight away that you stay home!

kimlo · 26/09/2020 09:17

She's wrong, it's not up to you to decide what to do. You don't feel well and you have a cough.

You have done the right thing.

Youngatheart00 · 26/09/2020 09:19

I believe employers can be fined for insisting employees come in with symptoms!

Get a test, follow the guidance and hope you feel better soon - no guilt whatsoever!

islockdownoveryet · 26/09/2020 09:20

She's definitely wrong , it baffles me companies that haven't got any contingency plans in place yet .
Stay home and get tested as soon as you can .

CKBJ · 26/09/2020 09:54

You’ve done the right thing. Not your responsibility to cover your shift, your responsibility was to let your employer know you had symptoms-which you have done.

All the best with your test result

Thanks everyone. I'm sure I'll be negative but best to get checked and be safer!
