App: is it unlawful not to isolate if alerted?

I'm concerned about reports of the app's inaccuracy. If you're alerted via the app do you get any details of the suspected contact with an infected person and do you HAVE to self isolate?

You are anonymous on the app, it was one of Apples requirements to do the dev work that would create a functional app.

Technically they would be able to get your details but legally as per their privacy policy as it stands right now they would be breaking the law.

I have the app and am willing to delete it if they change the privacy policy to change this stance.

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 26/09/2020 13:21

If I had any faith in the the app being a) accurate b) being fully compliant with GDPR then I would be perfectly happy to download it. As I don’t, then I won’t.
I don’t go anywhere where I can’t comply with social distancing rules anyway, so theoretically I should never be exposed.

FusionChefGeoff · 26/09/2020 13:25

There is a case study circulating at the moment about a restaurant in China which was the centre of an outbreak.

A lot of people who were affected were a lot more than 2m away due to airborne transmission via the air / heating system.

So just because you sat at a table and didn't go to the toilet doesn't mean you are safe from transmission I'm afraid

FinallyHere · 26/09/2020 13:26

as it stands right now they would be breaking the law.

You see, now, in the UK, that isn't quite as reassuring as I would like it to be.

First three References I can think of:-
Prorogue parliament
Eye tests in Durham
Customs border in Irish Sea

HeresMe · 26/09/2020 13:26

I'm not keen on downloading it, I don't want to isolate because someone on bus 3 seats away on a 20 mins bus journey tests positive even though we are wearing masks, or because someone in the flat below or next door tests positive as I am in vicinity even though there is a wall or floor between us

LittleRen · 26/09/2020 13:33

For those talking about checking out - it only contacts you to isolate if you have been in close contact. The phones communicate via Bluetooth - so if you left at 9pm it doesn’t matter as it works only on close Bluetooth contact.

The exposure logs are within settings in your iPhone not in the app.

canigooutyet · 26/09/2020 13:36

The law breaking is one of the reasons why it deters me.
We've all seen how quickly laws get changed on a whim.

I sound like a really dodgy criminal conspiracy nut 🤣I'm not honestly. I'm either stuck at home cos something is playing up, or worse in hospital. Or I end up going out for a walk for a couple of hours (get lost a lot lol) or a trip to the atm! Although did have a few local hotel stays in the summer for a change of scenery!!

canigooutyet · 26/09/2020 13:45

Plus those without an iPhone also should take into consideration that Google didn't want the same privacy policy protection that Apple did.

Google were given a NHS contract so I would go through Androids policies with a very fine tooth comb. Look up Google Health or Deepmind.

tootyfruitypickle · 26/09/2020 13:50

I’ve got exposure notifications . It’s reliably telling me I haven’t seen anyone for the last 24 hours 😁

MrsFezziwig · 26/09/2020 14:00

Happy to be corrected by someone who actually knows, but I thought that for the app the data was just shared between phones and is anonymous. Only you will know if you receive a notification and so it is up to you whether you self isolate or not.

With Track and Trace I think you would be contacted (or contact would be attempted) by an actual person so obviously there would be a record that you have been asked to isolate.

badlydrawnbear · 26/09/2020 16:43

@FinallyHere

There doesn't seem to be any way to check out again. How do they know how long you were there, or whether you crossed over with the positive case?

Puzzled.

I wondered this about 'checking in' to places without the app. I have scanned QR codes prior to the app and given my name and phone number to places without QR codes. I wondered how they would know how long I had been there. In Costa and McDonalds it asked how long I planned to stay. I am not sure I guessed accurately how long we would be in McDonalds, and in Costa the shortest time option was 1hr and we were there about 15mins.
lifesalongsong · 26/09/2020 16:51

I thought the checking in using the QR code and the app that notifies you if you've been in close contact with a positive case are two different things

Isnt the QR code for track and trace which is pretty much compulsory for venues and the app a voluntary completely separate thing?

Frouby · 26/09/2020 16:58

I won't be downloading the app unless I have to.

I am very not tinfoil hat, but do not trust anything the government rolls out. Added to that if I have to self isolate it means my son will miss 2 weeks of school as no one to take him. And added to that, if husband downloads and has to isolate he misses 2 weeks of work and is self employed as do 2 other people as he is the driver.

We don't go anywhere that couldn't contact us if we were exposed. We don't go to pubs and restaurants, we do supermarket shopping but am not stood within 2ms of anyone for 15 mins. The kids go to school, dh goes to work and would be contacted by them if exposed. I go to uni for now, or will do next week for 1 lesson a week but fully expecting that to disappear.

We shouldn't be reliant on a app, we should be signing in and out of places that we sre inside and stationary. Like pubs. Pubs that aren't I don't want to go in.

Funkypolar · 26/09/2020 20:48

Don’t have enough space on my phone to download it. Shame.

I think they're two different functions of the app. What I don't understand is the app telling you you've been in close contact with a confirmed case who can't identify you, why would you have been in that situation? Or is it that it is someone you know but manual track and trace is too slow to tell you?
