COVID in Scotland - kids visiting households

So the latest guidance says that no-one should visit other households, apart from exceptional circumstances such as tradespeople, couples and members from extended households.

Outdoors children under 12 can meet their friends, but not indoors.

But my DD (9) has on numerous occasions been asked to peoples households for activities since the new rules have come in. I imagine this is because people are sick of following the rules and see so many inconsistencies (eg kids can sit beside each-other in school; hug each other outdoors but not visit each-other at home).

I understand its very hard on people, but all in all, im surprised that people don't just follow the guidance for a few more weeks. Its really confusing for kids to hear one thing from the government, then see their parents and/or other adults do something different. And with the massive increase in cases in Scotland in the past 2 days, it is a clear warning that we need to take steps asap to get this back under control - even if it means a blanket approach.

I would like a better explanation around why kids cant visit each others houses when they are in school together, but in the meantime i still think its better to go along with the guidance. What are the views of others regarding under 12s? Am i out of step with what most people are actually doing?

I think the risk is not that kids will pass it to their classmates but to you. I know that sounds weird as you're going to get it anyway so let me illustrate.

Day 1: KidA has covid but does not know. Proceeds to spread it to classmates.

Day 7: KidB now has covid and as yet does not know. Keeps spreading it around class. Transmits it to parents.

Day 9: KidB and entire family are now self isolating as KidB has covid symptoms.

Day 10: KidB's mum is now infectious with covid but already self isolating so cannot spread it to anyone outside family.

Day 14: KidB's mum starts to cough

But if on Day3 KidA and KidB had a playdate, Mum got it directly from KidA and was spreading it around her workplace before KidB started coughing..

That is an extremely helpful example Swg1 I had not considered that. I think it needs to be better explained to public in general so they would understand why the guidance is as it is. Thank you very much.

The other thing is Classrooms have the windows open to increase airflow and reduce spread. However nobody's going to do that at home.

Please, please post this on its own thread. I don’t think many people consider this and just think that if their kid is at school all day with their friends why can’t they have play dates? It’s a really important point and everyone needs to see it.

Thanks for the explanation. That now makes far more sense.
