Why would you do this?!

DP has just been contract traced 😔 His company is still generally working from home but a few of them had to go into the office this week as a one off. It turns out the partner of a colleague who also went in has just tested positive. The colleague didn't need to go in - they volunteered, even though their partner was already symptomatic and waiting for the test results at that point...

Why would you do this? I know the test result delays have been really tricky for some, e.g. those on zero hours contracts. But in this case DP's colleague could have carried on doing their normal role from home whilst someone else went in for this particular project (there's a number of them in the same role - he didn't have any special attachment to the project).

Sorry if I've missed a good reason - I'm just struggling with not being able to see an end point right now and this only reinforces that 😞 we were also meant to be having a week off next week (our first this year maybe) and I guess we'll be at home now in case DP has it. Gahhh.

It’s really crap and obviously they shouldn’t have gone in.

Trying to be kind, I supposed they could be worried about losing their job and wanted to make a good impression by volunteering? It doesn’t excuse ignoring the rules though.

Apparently only one in five people are self isolating properly.

Did the company not do a return to work review before having people back into the office. I have to fill one out each time I go in (am wfh but go in about once a fortnight) and one of the questions is about close contacts with anyone needing testing in last 14 days. Maybe your DHS work needs to implement something similar.

Thank you, both. @PurpleDaisies - I'm trying to find a good reason so I don't lose all faith 😂 in their case I'd be surprised about job security, though - the company's fortunately not particularly affected by the pandemic (no-one was ever furloughed for example) and the role's quite a safe one as it is.

@SecretIdentitee that sounds like a good idea but I don't think they had it in place. They probably will now! I'm actually not sure how many companies are doing that. I had to go in a while ago (maybe before things opened up a bit) and there wasnt a questionnaire as such - they just asked us not to if we or anyone in our household had symptoms.

Because people are stupid and believe just cos something is rare it won't happen to them
