Do you think it is possible to not catch Covid 19 and last out until a vaccine?

Assuming that you are not shielding or not leaving the house, do you think it is possible to get through the next X number of months without catching it or are you resigned to it being inevitable?

I'm.62 and have never had flu so I'm hopeful but being careful, getting lots of fresh air and exercise and eating healthy, staying slim

MadameBlobby · 22/09/2020 23:50

Of course it is. The reason these measures are in place in the first instance is so most of us don’t get it!

KitKatastrophe · 23/09/2020 05:18

Yes obviously. There are 60 million people in the country. We would have to have an average over 300,000 cases per day for everyone to catch it in the next 6 months.

KitKatastrophe · 23/09/2020 05:21

@HazelE123

I am quite scared about catching it. OH works from home and we are home bods in a rural area and semi shielding. We’re both in a high risk category and taking a lot of precautions. But our main risk is 12 year old now back in school. I honestly think I would be a statistic if I had it. So what do you do? Not allowed to keep kids off school. The safety aspects in school need to be much better. Our school aren’t doing all the stuff they said they would.
If it makes you feel any better, even those in the shielding category are far more likely to survive the virus than not.

Yes. In general I don't tend to catch things like this. I'm out the house working every day, have a school age child, I go to pubs, restaurants, shops, been to the cinema, trampoline park, use public transport regularly, stayed in a hotel. I'm fairly relaxed about hand washing as well and I don't use sanitiser. I have yet to catch Covid, or if I have I've been completely asymptomatic. Cases are low in my area though.

MrsJonesAndMe · 23/09/2020 08:25

At this stage I don't know anyone who has had a confirmed case, but one child in a bubble of 60, one in 120 and DH about 100....odds probably against us in the next 6 months!

GabriellaMontez · 23/09/2020 08:37

Definitely! I know several people who had it and none of their families caught it off them.

Either it doesnt spread quite as easily as we may imagine or some people dont get it?

Littlemissdaredevil · 23/09/2020 08:41

I’m in Devon so I’m in one of the parts of the country with the lowest cases anyway. I’m also on mat leave with a baby and two year old. I don’t have the money to send DD to nursery and all the baby and toddler groups are still shut. My DH works by himself mainly in rural areas.

I think it’s unlikely we will catch it (fingers crossed)

MadameBlobby · 23/09/2020 09:46

Lots of people have kids at school. So do I. It still doesn’t mean it’s a given you’ll get it. Remember the initial modelling anticipated that even with no measures probably only 60% would have got it.

MadameBlobby · 23/09/2020 09:47

Or maybe it was 80%. Not everyone anyway.

Chickenfingers · 23/09/2020 12:22

@ChelseeDagger

Well I seem to have never caught the flu in the last thirty seven years so I remain hopeful.
This. I've only had flu twice in my life so who's to say I'll get CV.
amicissimma · 23/09/2020 13:04

The data from ships (cruise and navy) and from various studies, including Chinese ones where contacts were isolated together with their families, suggest that 14% to 20% of people with close exposure to Covid catch it.

So, first you have to encounter someone infectious, then you have to remain in close proximity to them for long enough to catch Covid, then you have to be one of the unlucky 1 in 5.

So most people can expect not to succomb.

PilatesPeach · 23/09/2020 14:58

very interesting indeed re cruise ship data
