Major flaw in not prioritising kids for tests

Teachers are going to be prioritised for tests which is good but not prioritising kids will mean if parents can't get a test for their child they stay at home for 14 days.
So obviously the implications of parents having to stay home for longer missing work when it might not be Covid is obvious, but something that seems to be missed by the govt is that if the child is positive (but not test confirmed) then their school bubble won't be sent home to isolate as not a confirmed case and potentially could be spreading unknown in the school.
How have they not thought this through?

Totally agree. Children may not get it badly but 1,000s of parents will be stuck at home unable to work with financial consequences for the family and knock on effects on the economy. Key workers kids don't appear to be exempt, which will have a knock on effect for us all. People will lie about symptoms in their kids in order to go to work and so it will spread.

Very short-sighted.

Teachers are not priority test about 5 down the list?

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 22/09/2020 11:30

NHS staff, Care home residents, Social Care staff and teachers wil receive priority for testing. Who do you think should be booted off the list to allow children to take priority?

Gobacktothe90s · 22/09/2020 11:32

My answer would be there should be enough tests for everyone

It's fine because the teachers will get their test and be able to get back to work ... but I'm not sure who they will be teaching because if children get struck down with symptoms and can't get a test they will be teaching no one in class or very small numbers especially as winter comes around.

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 22/09/2020 11:37

Childcare workers have not been given priority either. There are going to be a lot of the essential workers who can't go to work without childcare. Madness!

Anyone who can work from home, for a start. Anyone who is not in work.

At the very least put the prioritised key workers' children on the same priority as the key workers to ensure they can attend work.

BatSegundo · 22/09/2020 11:48

Sorry, that doesn't make sense as a direct reply to you @Itsabeautifuldayheyhey. Obviously, they can't take those people off the priority list, but there will be tests remaining after those groups and I think children should be higher up than low risk adults who don't need to leave the house for work.

So this is what a 'world beating testing system' looks like. Total shitshow. We'll end up with much tougher restrictions to curb the spread because the government fucked up.

They're pushing people to not get tested or honestly declare illnesses to schools and employers with these hierarchies of testing and with the new fines. Nobody isolates and then the whole thing goes even more tits up than it is atm.

Underhisi · 22/09/2020 11:53

Ds's special school have a policy that the whole bubble self isolates until the one with symptoms has a negative test or the 14 days are up. With no tests they will all be out of school for most of the time.

Kaiserin · 22/09/2020 12:08

Yep, that's what's happening to us (possibly).
One of our kids is ill with symptoms (quite bad), but can't be tested (tests are simply not available in our area right now), so his class is not isolating.

And a third (!) of that class was off sick a week ago! But no, officially, no COVID in our school, since there is no testing...
