Covid: Pubs and restaurants in England to have 10pm closing times www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54242634

So covid only comes out after 10 now! I don't actually see how this will make a difference as the half drunks will
Just move onto a house and won't care because they are half drunk (or drunk if they started early!)

Maybe they've announced this to see what the public reaction is (which, going by here, is 'Is that it? Pathetic. We need more') and then he will announce further restrictions (e.g. the one household) tonight, once he knows the public mood.

CKBJ · 22/09/2020 06:38

I contacted my MP beginning of August saying about nightclubs opening as “bars” and how could this be allowed. Also said about a curfew and table service everywhere. I now wonder if yet again “We’ve missed the boat” and it’s too little too late.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 22/09/2020 06:42

@RepeatSwan

Ive emailed asking to be made aware of cases in her yeargroup. Some schools are only contacting close contacts.

She's started a new secondary school which she loves and is just settling or I'd be keeping her home. Its really tough to weigh it up.

Yes probably Hmm
KittCat · 22/09/2020 06:48

What utter ineffectual nonsense...as per 🙄

Neolara · 22/09/2020 06:57

If that's it, then that's a terrible response after the warnings from yesterday. It completely undermines what the scientists were saying at the briefing.

Maybe that's why there were no politicians at the briefing yesterday, because the scientists didn't want to have their message diluted by politicians saying "Yes it's really bad, but just carry on as you were UK ".

RoseAndRose · 22/09/2020 06:58

What rules would posters who think this is inadequate, be setting in place instead?

One household/bubble for 2 weeks (exceptions for childcare etc). Basically more aligned with local lockdown restrictions.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 22/09/2020 07:01

Neolara I suspected the scientists didn't want to share a platform with the politicians.

I was expecting some version of lockdown after that.

There are no easy ways out of this are there.

I expected local lockdown type restrictions too, which would seem sensible, combined with massive improvement of the testing situation.
AuntieStella · 22/09/2020 07:35

Gove has just been on BBC Breakfast saying that this is 'part of the package' and that Boris will be announcing it and other measures to the House this afternoon, and broadcasting to the nation

So it's not just this.

No home socialising Schools and colleges part time or remote learning WFH everyone who can Fines for not SD or mask wearing where no genuine exemption
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/09/2020 07:45

I’m pissed off that I might have to work from home again. I feel safer in the office than a lot of other places but no thanks to the way my company has set up the office but no, this useless government will let me go to a pub but not sit in a socially distanced office with 7 others maximum

Redolent · 22/09/2020 07:51

It’ll stop drunk superspreaders from going on pub crawls, which caused spikes in places like Aberdeen. Will be particularly appropriate now that university students are returning.

But yes, in general, seems like a huge amount of fuss and discussion over very little change.

GetRid · 22/09/2020 07:51

I think the purpose is to raise awareness, (esp of younger people) that they need to be really careful now.

It's signposting the fact that summer's over and the carefree approach many were taking has to end.

Otherwise worse measures will come in

PicsInRed · 22/09/2020 07:54

In NZ there used to be 6pm pub closing and it was called the "6 o'clock swill", as all the men squashed and piled in to chug as much as possible after work before staggering home.

Doubt this will be much different.

That’s my reading of the situation too. Remember those awkward moments in the past when Whitty was telling us to be ultra cautious while Johnson was encouraging barbecues. They wanted to separate the analysis from the political decision making.

Boris Johnson invited Carl Heneghan to a meeting of scientific advisors on Monday, so maybe this isn’t so surprising.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 22/09/2020 07:58

Also the return to viewing sport, SD in stands from October 1st has been stopped. Many small football clubs could go under but obviously won’t affect most on here

IsAnybodyListening · 22/09/2020 08:06

My work didn't ask for us back, it was assumed WFH would be until 2021 at the earliest. Most large companies who can have people WFH grasped the fact that bringing people back into the office whilst this was going on would be very detrimental.

It's not just the public transport issues, it's the fact many of us parents will and have been made to isolate due to the children going back to school. Which is much easier if you are already WFH, rather than being in the office (and having given back home equipment) and then subsequently having to take a couple of weeks leave until tests come back.

Timekeepspassing · 22/09/2020 08:15

If pubs are staying open, albeit with restrictions I hope the baby group I attend is allowed to stay open. The teacher has worked really hard to make it Covid secure, we are all on separate mats 2m away, masks when not at our mat. I found that safer than the one time I went to a restaurant and haven’t ventured into a pub.

Neolara · 22/09/2020 08:24

Listening to Gove now on the radio. Doesn't sound like government is going to be introducing any major restrictions today from what he's saying. Maybe pubs shutting early genuinely is the government's response.

The government is basically pointless. They have done so little of practical benefit.

We just get bloody pointless slogans, like it's a permanent election campaign Angry

glowworm93 · 22/09/2020 08:35

I'm happy with that.

MyNameIsSteven · 22/09/2020 08:35

We went out for dinner on Saturday at five and the streets were packed with people dressed like it was 10pm in their out out gear. It was quite surreal. I felt like we were going clubbing with our kids.

Thewiseoneincognito · 22/09/2020 08:55

Hopefully this is the first step to pubs being closed properly for a good few months again. I can’t bear hearing drunk people at night time (live in the city) Lockdown was blissful having none of that to deal with.
