Bloody panic buying- again !

Do people never learn? A few of my friends said that they couldn’t buy pasta or toilet rolls today because people have been ‘stocking up ‘ 🙄 . Another friend who works in a supermarket said she’s seen loads of trolleys being filled up with loo rolls.

What is the bloody matter with people?

Aldi was well stocked on Friday.
I am not and did not panic buy before but it does scare me I don't know why
I did a normal monthly stock up on Friday. Which did Inc pasta, tins etc. But the amount I'd use for a month as I normally would

Shops need to get a plan in action now.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/09/2020 21:31

Why not toilet roll?

annabel85 · 21/09/2020 21:33

It's fair enough if people are doing it to prepare in case they have to self isolate, which many will be, so they do one big shop to cover a longer period. Often though the type of people who panic buy are just selfish idiots who wouldn't self isolate if asked to anyway, or just thickos that panic because they see an empty toilet roll meme on Facebook, so rush off to Tesco and buy 10.

silentpool · 21/09/2020 21:36

@Paranoidmarvin Rice milk is super easy to make, lots of recipes online, in case you get stuck again. Do you have a blender and a bit of cheesecloth? Same with almond/nut/oat. Just get the raw materials in.

SockYarn · 21/09/2020 21:41

@LivingIsHard

Fuckers. No fucking shops will close. Absolute fucking idiots.
Pretty much this. But they'll all be along shortly to say that they're not panic buying. They're prepping, which is entirely different. Hmm
Cutthetoastupwrong · 21/09/2020 21:51

I also keep thinking why loo roll? Foods for special dietary needs I can understand, long life foods your child is likely to eat, nutritious frozen foods etc I can also follow but if we physically couldn't get any shopping for weeks the last thing I'd care about is loo roll, assuming we had running water and even if not I'm sure we'd find some solution but food is much more important

everythingbackbutyou · 21/09/2020 22:03

Not in UK, but last week the toilet roll/kitchen towel shelves at the supermarkets were looking decidedly barren. With sinking heart, I knew - the hoarding has begun again. People are so fucking weird.

Vivana · 21/09/2020 22:29

Yep here we go again. I work for a supermarket and pasta and toilet roll was all gone today. The abuse has started again at workers as people have brought all the toilet roll and no we magically cannot make them reappear on the shelf and no we don't have endless supplies in the warehouse at the back. Time for me to get out of retail

SuzieCarmichael · 21/09/2020 22:41

My supermarket has had delivery slots freely available for ages now. I checked at the weekend - slots all day every day for the next two weeks. Just checked again - all gone.

ErdingtonOffer · 21/09/2020 22:41

What caused the panic buying the first time was the uncertainty, people not knowing whether we were about to be sealed into our homes or something absurd like that. It was all new territory and people understandably panicked.

This time the empty shelves are being caused by those of the mindset "I better get a few extra packets in case those bloody panic buyers start up again".

Idiocy.

Spacie · 21/09/2020 23:00

I've just completed an online shop for delivery tomorrow morning. (Including toilet paper as my mum phoned and asked me to panic buy some for her Grin. She knows which day I shop). Nothing important was out of stock.

AnyFucker · 21/09/2020 23:16

Last week I could get an online food shop within 24 hours

Today, I cant get one for 8 days

Here we go ....

beargryllshasabigrope · 21/09/2020 23:21

ffs I've just bought a Morrison's delivery pass thinking that the online shopping craze was calming down. Seems I was wrong

AnyFucker · 21/09/2020 23:23

Bad move, mate

My Morrison's delivery pass went unused virtually all through March, April, May and June

amieejust · 21/09/2020 23:30

All was quiet and normal in a local Asda today, but when I drove past the Aldi car park in the next town it was packed, just like Christmas.

Notcontent · 21/09/2020 23:36

Well - I did buy an extra pack of loo paper today. Two reasons - my dd is sick and I am concerned I will come down with the virus she has (I think it’s just a nasty cold) in which case I may have to stay at home for a while. Second reason - I hate to say this - 31 December is fast approaching...

Graphista · 22/09/2020 00:40

It really annoys me, supermarkets need to take the responsibility this time, they knew what happened last time and they are letting it happen again totally agree!

As SOON as it started they should have restricted sales! And as much as possible increased orders with manufacturers/wholesalers AND manufacturers/wholesalers should be doing their part too.

@vivana I’m sorry for those at the blunt end getting the flak but seriously management should have predicted and prepared for this and I’m angry and worried they haven’t!

They cannot claim unforeseen circumstances this time! And with non-perishable products even if THEY had stocked up and the sales didn't happen they wouldn't have been out of pocket as they'd sell eventually.

Pachonga · 22/09/2020 00:53

I assume people stockpile toilet roll because it’s easy to store, won’t go to waste and, well, because not being able to wipe your arse isn’t ideal

Vivana · 22/09/2020 08:40

00:40Graphista

I really do agree with you i feel they just care more about money than safety of staff and customers. They have acted to quick taking floor stickers down. They don't clean as much as they said they would. They have cut staff hours down. It's like a free for all in supermarkets and management don't care.

Vivana · 22/09/2020 08:43

Supermarkets also don't limit the numbers of customers in. In fairness customers have been great with there masks. I wear one while in work. Even managers walk around with out masks on.

Spacie · 22/09/2020 09:32

I've had an email from Morrison's this morning saying managed queues are being reintroduced. I only noticed they'd gone last week.

KeepOnMovingForwards · 22/09/2020 10:35

Loads in Morrisons today. No shortages of anything.
I know someone who works in Tesco- they said it's nothing like in March. If it gets bad, I would assume they would limit what you can buy in one go.

gamerchick · 22/09/2020 10:46

Our Morrisons has put the guards back on the door and seperated the entrance/ exit. Just a few empty shelves but I'm glad they've acted immediately.

Local ASDA is back to queuing outside, so looks like they've acted as well. Which surprises me for Asda.

Tesco never stopped being strict so....

NiknicK · 22/09/2020 10:53

Yes i noticed this too in Asda yesterday. I will admit that i have bought extra food items for my ds who is autistic just in case as last time people bought up absolutely everything which unfortunately included most of the food that ds will eat. He would go hungry first before eating say a different brand of spaghetti and last time he was hysterical when i couldn't get stuff. Thankfully a friend of mine had to step in and help me by going round to supermarkets where she lived (40 miles away) and she came and brought what we needed leaving it on our door step. Can't risk that happening again so i have bought extra stuff.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 22/09/2020 10:56

ASDA has been a fucking disaster in the recent past (in Cwmbran, anyway). No one on the door, no social distancing enforced, upstairs tills closed so forcing everyone to queue together. People have no faith in supermarkets to manage this situation, so of course they are buying more than they need so they don't have to keep going shopping!
