Curfews in Pubs & Restaurants

Hello, I've always been baffled about this being suggested as a possible restriction. Could anyone enlighten me with regards to how time of closing would make a difference to Covid transmission?

I don't get it either.

Me either. If I was younger and out with friends I'd just be more likely to continue the night at someone's house.

People only get drunk in pubs after 10pm.
Drunk people fail to socially distance.
Before 10pm, people will only have a swift half. Or something.
It’s bollocks

Theoretically it would cut late night drunkeness and social distancing fails, without reducing lower risk trade from bar meals or people having a quick one or two.

It does run the risk of driving late night drinking with mates "underground" into private dwellings which might be even worse for social distancing.

The pub I work at has been so quiet we are closing at 8.30/9pm some nights. It’s bloody depressing & I really cannot see how it will survive.
I see my boss’s whole life draining away with every passing day .

Chestergirl39 · 21/09/2020 17:55

Don’t get it either, presuming they think that people will curtail their evening before getting too drunk and forgetting about distancing?

The reality is that people will probably start earlier, or go back to someone’s house to continue drinking?

I do think that some pubs/restaurants have relaxed their covid measures too far, and this could be impacting unfairly on the others. Eg. Some tables seem to be closer together now, no table service, meaning people are to and fro to the bar etc. Also have seen pictures of some that allow people to stand and drink with people all crammed in together, but not experienced this personally.

Thank you for asking this as I've been wondering the same thing!

Thanks for the replies!

All it will do is push people out earlier.

We are in an area going into local lockdown tomorrow and on the local paper I have seen lots of “well looks like it’s a day session instead” type posts. Hmm

Go to a city centre on a weekend - particularly Saturday night - and it's packed out with people all through to the morning. At least through the summer although it's been very busy, the weather has allowed more people to stay outside where they're less vulnerable to the virus.

People travel from all over the region to go to their nearest city or main high street and have 'a night out'. If it's a 10pm curfew then a night out because an afternoon or evening out, essentially.

It'll only work though if people aren't selfish and don't go back to parties and we're at the point where we can't rely on people to do the right thing and the police don't have the resources to enforce the law.
