Do you think there will ever be a vaccine

Rollawayyourstone · 20/09/2020 08:43

Just that really?

I feel optimistic that the Oxford vaccine will be successful.

What does everyone else think about a vaccine?
Surely this is our best chance of resuming some kind of normality again?

Does anyone work in health care? Any inside information about a vaccine? Grin

Umm yes but no a silver bullet vaccine, one that helps, reduces infection chances day by 60 percent or one that gives six months of protection so helpful but not vaccinate everyone and off we go back to normal.

Shamrocksunshine · 20/09/2020 08:53

Yes but not as we know vaccines to be. It won’t be one hundred percent. It will contribute to herd and we will all go back to normal. We’re not even a year in to this pandemic, and people have lost the appetite for abiding by rules etc. People won’t stand for this for years on end.

Just my thoughts.

Coldwinterahead1 · 20/09/2020 08:54

No 😢

TheAirbender · 20/09/2020 08:54

I live in Dubai where front line health workers are already receiving a vaccine (before it completes phase 3 trials, after a successful second stage). So yes, I think there will be. Whether it will be completely effective or not, I don't know.

MrsWhites · 20/09/2020 08:56

I think there will be a vaccine of some description but how much it will help I don’t know? I don’t believe it will completely protect against Covid long term plus there will be a lot of people who won’t consent to it.

I think those who expect a silver bullet, one vaccine cures all distributed to everyone in the country are very naive.

GreenGoldRed · 20/09/2020 08:59

Yes, but I think it will be like the current flu vaccine. Some years more successful then others and you’ll need it every year.

On average 20k people die of flu each year even with vaccine. Some years are worse.

I agree with this, I suspect it will be given with the flu vaccine too as a yearly thing, probably only offered to those who are vulnerable, a certain age or work in health care. Who knows when it will be though ☹️
GreenGoldRed · 20/09/2020 09:03

@Shamrocksunshine I totally agree with you. In March the people on MN saying we shouldn’t have had a lockdown were demonised. There feels like a real shift recently. Yes, some people want to lockdown, but there seems to be a greater sense we just have to get on with this.

Bickles · 20/09/2020 09:03

Yes, it’ll be like flu. Needed every year and people will still get Covid/ die from it but not as many so life will return to a variation on normal.

ProperlyPdOff · 20/09/2020 10:16

Yes.
Vaccine science is very advanced now. We are in phase 3 trials now, the vaccine clearly works.

GoldenOmber · 20/09/2020 10:23

Yes, likely more than one. I think the biggest issue with a vaccine will be making and distributing enough doses for people in poorer countries.

Interesting, everyone thinks to some degree, there will be a vaccine.

What makes you think there won’t be?

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 20/09/2020 10:53

Yes. They will not give perfect immunity and boosters will be required, but I will be surprised (and very, very worried) if we don’t get a useable vaccine within the next several months, available for the most vulnerable and frontline HCWs, and available for roll out during 2021.

IcedPurple · 20/09/2020 10:55

Yes. Not one but several, and probably reasonably soon too.

I agree with this. I really think one will become approved within the next few months and distributed in 2021.

The only thought that I’ve had is the safety.

Reading about phase 3 trials, they are said to often last years. But we just have to trust that the vaccine will only be approved if they are certain of safety, even if it is available much earlier.

I think there will be a vaccine but I’m worried that governments will still want to keep some restrictions in place. As others have said the vaccine probably won’t be completely effective so as much as I’d love everything to go back to normal I’m not sure it will.

unmarkedbythat · 20/09/2020 10:59

Probably, but I don't think it will be the 100% effective, long term absolute solution many members of my family do.

@bluetongue

The flu vaccine isn’t 100% effective.

But we live along side it with no restrictions.

I’ve been hoping it will be the same with Covid.

Yes I do think there will be. I am really optimistic about the Oxford one. If you have bbc sounds (I'm sure available elsewhere too) then listen to the life scientific (the episode with Sarah Gilbert) she is the one in charge of the oxford vaccine. Someone recommended the episode on here yesterday and I listened last night. They just don't know when. I really pray we will know soon if it is effective. I am optimistic that health care workers will be vaccinated this year. Then start rolling out in the new year for everyone else. It will take a while but I am optimistic.

I agree that it’s very likely we will have a vaccine (possibly more than one) but won’t be the panacea that some people think.

I think it will be early next year, if we are lucky. By then, there is a reasonable chance a number of vaccines will have been shown to be efficacious. The next challenge will be getting it administered to all the right people. Even then it will likely only provide temporary protection.
