The issue of long covid is starting to be more talked about, it seems.

Am hoping we get info from other countries as we won't get anything from our government who are trying to ignore the whole situation it feels.

Most viruses leave a proportion of suffers with post viral syndrome. As a fit 20-something I was too ill to work for 12 weeks after a bout of 'just' flu. I have friends who are still unwell from flu in 2017/18.

Why should Covid be any different?

I agree it's concerning but I can't worry about it without more info.

What symptoms are they experiencing? It needs defining.

How many are experiencing lingering fatigue or a sore throat vs can't get out of bed?

How many are recovering form these symptoms vs how many are still suffering?

The issue is with no vaccine and no.immunity the potential numbers are very large. Societally that's a big risk.

I think it's concerning but early days to be panicking too much. I just spent an evening recently with someone who had Long Covid. She had 3+ months of struggling with her energy and breathing and had other symptoms. She wasn't managing the stairs, etc she was so breathless. She's spent the last month out running most days on the north Downs again. I'm talking proper hilly runs. I don't think she's 100% there but she's improved drastically. We just don't know at this stage how many sufferers will still be getting issues in the longer term. A minority, I'm very sure and they will need research and support, but not likely a large amount.

The post viral syndrome occurs despite a vaccine theoretically being available for some viruses. Although we don't count flu and other virus cases, nor post viral syndrome cases, the number of flu deaths over the last few months suggests that the numbers affected by flu are larger than Covid, despite flu vaccine. Quite a risk.

But it's not a competition. My point is that it's reasonable to expect post viral sydrome or 'long Covid' from Covid because we get 'long viral illness' from most viruses.

Totally agree. We expect to get back to "normal" way too quickly. A virus, particularly a systemic one, can take anywhere from weeks to years to recover from. Glandular Fever is a good example of this.

The issue as i see it not whether some people have post-viral syndrome, but how many and how severely. Is it worse than other illnesses? If not, it’s sad for those that have it but it shouldn’t impact on our public policy response... If it’s major issue affecting many thousands, it needs to. Surely went would have enough of an idea now to make an initial judgement on this.

That source seems like a tabloid newspaper.

Doesn't Epstein-Barr virus knock most young adults out for a year minimum.

I don't understand why we are not getting more info, as yes we have six months' worth now.

My gloomy side (which is winning the battle these days I must say) is thinking if there were good news, they'd be telling us.
