Would you test if you knew why your toddler had a fever?

15 month old has a high fever. Started 10 days ago. We tested for CV the second day, negative. She seemed to get a bit better, just a bit off her food, then temp back 7 days later. Took her to the doctor who said very clear case of tonsillitis and prescribed antibiotics. However, the GP also said as she hadn't tested for CV19 herself she couldn't guarantee it wasn't that so we should look to get a test.

This seems insane to me. Isn't it a bit like saying if a toddler has a broken leg you can't guarantee they haven't got Covid because a lot of children are asymtomatic? She had a very visible tonsil infection and so of course she has a fever.

After soul searching we have got a test but I feel guilty as there are clearly not enough and we've taken one from someone who might have unexplained symptoms and really need it.

Curious to know what others would have done!

Don’t think there’s a right or wrong solution here! Like you say probably no point redoing the test but the fever went and then returned so there is a slim chance that it’s caused by covid so they test is wise in this respect. For what it’s worth I have a friend who was diagnosed with tonsillitis early on in the pandemic but after being unwell for several weeks was eventually told it was probably covid after all. Thus was before testing of the general public was available. If nothing else it will put your mind at rest.

Oh, that's interesting- I'm glad I got the test then, just in case. It's going to be a lint winter for parents with young children if we have to get tests for every temperature, but hopefully the testing system will get the funding it needs

Can you keep her home for the required amount of time? If so I really wouldn’t bother putting her through another test.

UnaMujer · 19/09/2020 15:23

Sorry I misread your op and see you’ve already done a test. 🤦‍♀️ Just ignore me

PleasantVille · 19/09/2020 15:23

iI don't quite understand what happened but if you had a 2nd test because the GP didn't do the first one then no, I wouldn't have had the 2nd one. Have I got that right?

RMarieClaire · 19/09/2020 15:24

@PleasantVille I think because it had been a week since her last test and she had a high temp.

My DS had Covid and he had a slight temp on days 1&2 then nothing until day 14 when it came back. So you never know.

@UnaMujer we can isolate if we must but we both work and it's very difficult with her out of nursery. I'm also pregnant and due my scan on Monday. I'm very anxious and desperate to make it.

The test is horrid for them though. We don't usually have much on so I think next time we'll just do the 10 days.

I think I'd isolate for a few days.
