Testing questions, am I being dim?

Just thinking ahead a bit in case. How do people who are feeling quite ill get tested? Symptoms of Covid19 and Flu are similar. I have had flu come on quite quickly previously in my life and could barely get out of bed let alone log on to my computer, book a test and drive and then wait with no toilet to take it? How does that work?
Another question: what happens when my children catch random colds or minor viruses that give them a temperature for a day or two? Is there a window where we can just watch and wait in case it goes down over the day or do we all have to isolate immediately?

The theory is if you’re too unwell to travel to a test you arrange a home postal test. Of course in practise recently that hasn’t exactly worked out.
Generally speaking there doesn’t seem to be long wait when you go to an appointment at a drive through testing centre, at least not when I/friends have been.
There’s no wait and see for random colds (as things stand), once someone displays symptoms they should book a test and the family isolate. Again, easier said than done at the moment, and I’m sure in practise isn’t always happening if people feel confident in another reason for the symptom.

If the random cold includes a cough, then you need to test

Which is a PITA, especially if you feel too unwell to drive as home testing is so erratic, plus I'm not sure I'd ever feel confident I'd done it properly)

Copious snot isn't a Covid symptom, is it?

If you can’t get a test then I suppose you would just isolate for 14 days ?

No, snot not a symptom
