 Coronavirus: 'Increasingly likely' London will face tougher lockdown restrictions news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-increasingly-likely-london-will-face-tougher-lockdown-restrictions-12075535

So it looks like although cases are low, Sadiq Khan wants to lockdown "as cases in the area are rising". As someone in a low case area I agree and hope it helps in the long run!

(I did check for posts on this became saw none, so apologies if there are others!)

Good move Sadiq - let’s kill off the economy whilst there’s still a semblance of one left.

In the meantime, the bus I was travelling on today had a lot more than 30 passengers on board - and not all of them were wearing facemasks. Will you be doing anything about that? Nope, thought not.

See round here everyone has masks and the busses have signs saying full if they are unless school service! But we also have low cases.

Most of the buses round here do too. But the one I was on today definitely had more than 30 passengers and a small group standing by the exit doors wearing no masks. I got a photo of the bus numberplate after getting off and am considering reporting the driver - it felt very unsafe.

Definitely report if you felt unsafe!

Cases aren't low in London. Even with the severe shortage of tests, meaning no-one knows the true numbers anywhere in the country, London's cases are known to be increasing. Despite the bizarre policy of reporting London's cases by individual borough (which makes it seem less bad than it really is) London is very interlinked (as noted in a recent Evening Standard report on the situation). Hence the potential city-wide lockdown.

The Bank of England was warning yesterday how the rise in coronavirus cases will damage the economy. Because, of course, failure to take effective action to halt and then contain the spread is economically dangerous.

That said, I'd say there's a very good argument against a lockdown particularly in London with the major international airports. Unpleasant measures like lockdowns need to be worthwhile. Which they won't be if we don't also put in place border restrictions (with proper quarantine for essential travel).

London’s overall infection rate is 25 per 100,000 that is lower than Bolton, Sefton, birmypretty much anywhere in local lockdown.

I do think london will rise but no at the moment factually on a country wide level even if you report London as a whole it does not have a high infection rate, oddly if you want to make that argument you would be better to look at individual boroughs where some are over thirty per 100,000but if you want to look at London as a whole it’s rising (from 18 last week) but no not high high in a country level and not at the level of those areas in local lockdown.

And I am not sure London has a specific issue with testing those in Bolton seem to be struggling so no it’s not just London cannot get tests the rest of the count can..no where can get tests!

London and the South East will be last to be locked down as it basically is the Uk economy.

Like I said, we don't know the true number of cases anywhere in the country, thanks to the test shortages. It's definitely a problem in London as much as anywhere else. It's been reported on.

London's cases are clearly on the rise.The government wouldn't be discussing a city-wide lockdown if they weren't.

@user1471439240
They're being incredibly shortsighted (again) if that's their reasoning. As The Bank of England has warned, the economy is in danger if Covid cases keep on increasing.

Why would you report the bus driver? What can he do realistically?

Obviously you were there, you saw the people without masks, I imagine they all looked like they'd take a stern telling off and not react negatively in any way?

He can ask people to wear face coverings. He could, in theory, refuse people getting on without a mask, and he can tell someone to get off the bus for not complying. The area I grew up in, the second two options would likely result in the buses windows getting bricked, or driver spat on/otherwise assaulted. They can't physically remove people from the bus. They could stop the bus and refuse to move, maybe call the police. How many times a day are they going to do that?

I'd imagine bus drivers have been told to abide by the laws where possible, but to avoid confrontations, as they aren't paid for that shit, they are paid to drive.

In the worst case scenario of you reporting him, he loses his job? What does that achieve? You'll have potentially knackered another family at a time when so many are already struggling.

I've just noticed before hitting post that you also felt he was over capacity. If a route has 20 stops and due to the nature of the stops, there's always 30 people on there by the time it gets to stop 10, what are the people at stops 11 onwards supposed to do? They could run more buses, but they'd need to find the extra vehicles and drivers to meet the need, which doubles the cost. Again I would imagine they have been told to use their own judgement.

I understand you felt unsafe, but throwing people at the bottom of the food chain in that organisation under a bus seems wrong to me.

WishIWasSomewhereElse · 19/09/2020 01:42

@FrothyB quite right!

Bus drivers are sensitive to the fact that lots of people claim exemption from wearing masks... How many threads do we see on here, with people being outraged when challenged for not wearing a mask and having a medical exemption? I thought some disabilities are hidden?

Drivers are not the police and are not allowed to refuse entry, as a lot of vulnerable people use them and may well be exempt.
