It's a school one - isolation & provisions

covetingthepreciousthings · 18/09/2020 22:08

I've had a look through the threads recently but couldn't see one on this..

Are schools in your area providing any online learning or provisions for children isolating? Whether it's due to household symptoms or year group bubble contact isolation.

I haven't heard anything from our school (academy) about any provision for isolation, and wondered what others are doing.

My primary aged DC has been in isolation for a week now - they managed 4 days at school in their new class - and we've not had anything from school at all, I even asked for the weekly spellings or homework sheet and didn't hear back.

I was replying to a primary teacher who has children off with symptoms, not someone in y11

I know. But the same time and workload issues are there for secondary staff, but year 11 parents, reasonably, may have different expectations. Managing individually isolating students is going to be harder than managing a closed bubble, I think.
madcow88 · 19/09/2020 08:15

School are being fantastic. Getting a full days learning and this is from a school where no work was set during lockdown.

Bulblasagne · 19/09/2020 08:20

Op, across the board standardisation is the key isn't it.

The lack of that instruction is what caused the disparity during lockdown.

Our school hasn't been going over stuff since March, they ploughed straight on with new work.
One dd can have work set but the other needs teaching! Any work set on line should come with a video of it being taught otherwise its back to mum bloody teaching!

Bulblasagne · 19/09/2020 08:22

I am sure schools follow the curriculum and know where they are?. Is it so hard to present dp with a list... This is where we got too, tick tick ✅, this is what we will cover for 2 weeks...

TwinkleMerrick · 19/09/2020 08:22

@ISBN111 yes they should be getting work from every subject, but it may take a day or 2 to prepare as we are very stretched atm.

badlydrawnbear · 19/09/2020 08:38

DC1's whole year group is isolating, so she has work set daily as her teacher is also isolating at home. DC2 should still be in school but we can't get her there when I am at work because we can't leave DC1 at home on her own twice a day while DH takes her and picks her up, so DC2 is missing 2 or 3 days of school each week. I emailed DC2's teacher and asked if he could give me any idea what she should be covering in school so I can do some work at home with her, and he has sent me lots of worksheets for maths and phonics and their topic. I was pleasantly surprised by how helpful he was able to be, because I wasn't expecting anything while he was also teaching the class. I expect that if DC2 was isolating because she or we were symptomatic, some work would be provided, but I don't think the school is under any obligation to do so.

Wait4nothing · 19/09/2020 08:43

I think my school are only providing work for those that ask - because we haven’t had chance to plan it all yet - but I’ve got pupils self isolating (primary) and work ready to give them but have been told I’m not to make contact with them. If they ask I can send it. Seems crazy but our online provision isn’t fully operational (it is our side but not all parents have completed their part) and we already have a huge workload teaching in real life and preparing work for home too so I think they don’t want to add extra pressure to staff until it is needed.

Bickles · 19/09/2020 08:46

If it’s due to DS having symptoms then no, but if the whole class is off they will move to online learning like they did in lockdown. Seems reasonable to me!

Nellodee · 19/09/2020 08:59

I said many months ago that time should have been spent in creating fixed weekly plans for ALL schools up to and including year 9, so that if students were isolating, they could access a shared curriculum that would be mirrored within schools.

Volunteer teachers could have been recruited and police checked and both phone and online systems of chat support put in place to assist students with the work. Isolating teachers could have helped man these lines for their specific subject/years.

Oak Academy was good, but it didn't go far enough to ensure that all students nationwide were studying the same thing at the same time. So for example, every year 4 student in the country could have been doing mental methods of addition this week in maths, and studying the Mayans in history, or something along those lines.

RedCatBlueCat · 19/09/2020 09:03

We were off the second week of term.... and ut was the whole week til we got a negative rest.
My Y7 got quite a lot of stuff through. We did it.
My Y5 got absolutely nothing. At a minimium, I would have liked to know the areas they were teaching - so maths topic, English topic, other areas, spelling list. If I dont know what they are doing, what use is Oak? The chances of me picking a week of lessons from Oak that match the teachers plan is close to 0.

The class who are isolating along with their teacher are aparently getting work.

ISBN111 · 19/09/2020 09:54

@Nellodee

Are you writing that under the impression that year 10’s got anything more than revision materials and no feedback through lockdown?
Just so you know, they didn’t. At least not at our school. The face to face was a joke.

These threads make me want to cry. The provision at our school has been so minimal, i can see my kids are at a huge disadvantage as they go into GCSE.

middleager · 19/09/2020 10:05

My year 10 was back home after a positive case in their options group. A third of the year home.

On day one, he did not receive work for two lessons and for a third, could not fo the work as the text book was at school.

Now the school has two other year groups out.

I can see they are trying to catch up as there was more work yesterday, but it's not the same as classmates' work, and what of those missed lessons? I am so worried about this. Teachers are caught between a rock and a hard place with a third of years out. It is a mess of Govt making and totslly unsustainable.

I've had to order study guides for English, but I'm working and I'm no teacher. One of the missed lessons was Chemistry. These are GCSE syllabus and my skils stop at Biff and Kipper. He's staring at a screen for long periods too.

I feel sorry for him, healthy and isolated while his friends go yo school, while the school promotes lunchrime cluubs on docial media. Clubs he can't attend.

Due to the high volume of cases in this area, I think when he does return it won't be for long and that his brother will be sent home too.

middleager · 19/09/2020 10:06

He is back home, not was. After just 7 days in school.

No, I'm writing it with the understanding that it would be almost impossible to do this centrally for years 10 and above due to the differing requirements of the varying exam boards.

DominaShantotto · 19/09/2020 10:14

Mine were off for a couple of days waiting for a COVID test last week. Had an email with login details for one of the online providers within the first day (dd2 is new to the school or this would have already been in place), plus google classroom already established and running, and spellings the school already does online. Work pack in the post that evening too which was a bit over simple twinkl stuff but they’re still trying to assess where these kids are at.

If it’s a full bubble closure then daily stuff will be provided and I know the kids who’ve stayed off because of vulnerable family members are getting work provided.

year5teacher · 19/09/2020 10:20

We’re providing 2 weeks worth of home learning linked to each year group’s current topics. This is for if a child has to isolate while waiting for a test, for example. If my class have to go off then I’ll do daily zoom, film lesson inputs, receive their work and upload feedback for each child.

ThrawnCow · 19/09/2020 10:26

Daily maths and english work, and tasks related to other curriculum/topic areas.

MojoJojo71 · 19/09/2020 10:28

@ISBN111 DD is in year 3. Her school were teaching online all through lockdown so they’ve got used to it. I guess it’s easier that it’s a whole class though, if it was only a couple of children in a class I’m not sure how that would work

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/09/2020 10:30

The government guidance on home learning:

Where needed, this is high-quality and safe, and aligns as closely as possible with in-school provision. Schools and other settings continue to build their capability to educate pupils remotely, where this is needed.

Schools should be sending home learning for children and bubbles isolating.

Nquartz · 19/09/2020 10:31

A friend of DD's was isolating last week, she was set 2 maths sheets, one piece of English creative writing & an art activity. Also advised to read & practice times tables online. So not much!

They are using seesaw for homework & any work set for DC who are off so it can be set virtually.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/09/2020 10:33

My school, if an individual child is isolating, will have them join lessons via Teams. The teacher shares their screen with them and they can hear what is being said.

If a whole bubble isolates, the class are sent recorded lessons for English, Maths and Reading for each day and one Science and Topic a week. This is what they would have had at school.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 19/09/2020 10:39

whole class sent home to self isolate yesterday after the TA tested positive. we've been promised daily Twinkl Maths and English worksheets.

covetingthepreciousthings · 19/09/2020 14:36

@BeingATwatItsABingThing is that a state or private school?
