Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

Porcupineinwaiting

You were very unfortunate in that. Dp, myself and 2 adult children had what we think looking back was Corona from about 14th December when dd got infected we think when she was managing a wedding where most of the guest were over from China to me who took to my bed 2 weeks later.

But there were no restrictions then as we were all told it wasn’t in the country then.

ChavvySexPond · 20/09/2020 14:06

@FubsyRanbler

Perhaps look at it this way. For those of you relying on deliveries, take-always, neighbours, and the government...we won’t be in your way, competing for what you want. Doesn’t that sound like a good thing?
Precisely.
mosscarpet · 20/09/2020 14:09

@gamerchick

That's how you end up with no-one being allowed (or able) to go outside for a month

Apparently you 'just order in' then come on here and complain there are no slots.

Fuck that, I'd rather just not have to think about it at all.

or, you ask someone else to go and do your shopping for you, because that of course is far less selfish than enusring you have supplies available if you are able to do so!

Forgot about that one. Of course, it makes perfect sense Grin

The press have started whipping it up for the eternally thick. Instead of having a go at those of us who got ready over the past few months. How about having a go at those who are selfish and will see you go without. There is no need to panic buy.

Is prepping the same as panic buying? Or different?
I think if there is plenty of pasta on the shelves and you buy a bag for this week and a bag to put aside, that's prepping. If there are two bags on the shelf and you need one but buy two because you see there are only two then that's panic buying.

mum2jakie · 20/09/2020 14:29

Thing is there's no prizes for being the morally superior shopper who doesn't buy any additional toilet paper and is left with a dirty backside! Grin

I've got a small Brexit/Lockdown collection of items saved up over the last few months, including an extra pack of toilet rolls. Don't want to be caught out like last time!

MaverickDanger · 20/09/2020 14:32

I have started booking delivery slots this time round, more because this time I am in my third trimester and don’t really fancy going out & queuing anyway.

DH will do top up shops at quieter times, but we are looking to reduce our risk & exposure more so than during the first wave.

I am starting to think about stocking up for Christmas, but again more so for pregnancy reasons than worries about the supply chain.

JamieLeeCurtains · 20/09/2020 15:01

Honestly people won't be happy unless you not only stay home but you eat dry oats ir have to ration the frozen peas in order to survive

Don't forget the poster on the broken ankle thread who says she hopped to the hospital because it would have been wrong to have used an ambulance. Apparently it's perfectly possible to hop to A&E with your broken foot in the air and your arms out for balance, rather than use any kind of resource whatsoever other than an umbrella.

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/09/2020 15:08

Still went to a&e though. Amateur. Thats what sticky back plastic and garden canes are for...

JamieLeeCurtains · 20/09/2020 15:19

Not allowed to prep any painkillers though

JacobReesMogadishu · 20/09/2020 15:19

Friends have reported that people were queuing to get into the supermarket today, first time I’ve known that in months.

SistemaAddict · 20/09/2020 15:20

That thread was funny. Threads about a&e are some of the most bizarre on mumsnet. Instead of going straight to a&e with a suspected heart attack or fracture the advice is often to phone 111 and/or the GP to be seen by the GP first who will only send you to a&e anyway. My clinics used to run hours behind at times because patients had come to the GP instead of a&e and it was then for us to try and treat and monitor as best we could while waiting for an ambulance to take them the quarter of a mile to Manchester Royal Infirmary. Just go straight there, that's what it's for! People don't like to make a fuss unless they are at deaths door but the knock on effects from going to the GP instead of a&e are huge.

Oblomov20 · 20/09/2020 15:24

No.

Surely we've learnt from the stockpiling shenanigans of March that it's unnecessary and worse still damaging to others? Hmm

JamieLeeCurtains · 20/09/2020 15:27

Indeed, Bercows

I think I'm doing everyone a massive favour actually by prepping my medicine warehouse cabinet with my prescription meds now, so I don't I have to bother a GP or pharmacist or run-ragged volunteer if there's a lockdown / 2nd wave.

I'm really not 'panic ordering' or whatever I'll be accused of next. I'm preparing.

Those people weren't prepping...
JamieLeeCurtains · 20/09/2020 15:38

I thought it was an extra £11 spend per household per week that ground the country's supply system to a halt? Because it's a Just In Time (JIT) system?

Didn't take much.

JingsMahBucket · 20/09/2020 15:39

@MRex
We also get cheese by post because it's cheeses we really like with 2-3 months in date usually.

Please tell me more about this magical wonder of cheese by post! Who’s your dealer? Come on, spill it!

SistemaAddict · 20/09/2020 15:39

@JamieLeeCurtains that's another cupboard I need to sort through and make sure I'm using things in the right date order. I rely on several medications to keep me with a decent quality of life, able to breathe and not be in unmanageable pain. I think those without chronic conditions will never understand what it's like to have to rely on medication to have a life worth living where we are able to function for our dc. You've just reminded me it's time to order my repeat medication, thank you Smile

Juniperandrage · 20/09/2020 15:41

Those people weren't prepping...

It honestly doesn't matter how many times it's said, people are being deliberately obtuse about it I think

MRex · 20/09/2020 15:48

@JingsMahBucket - Lymn Bank Farm www.postacheese.com/. Their chilli and black pepper cheeses are amazing. Nice blue cheese they get from someone else too.
(Slightly scared posting that I won't be able to order my black pepper cheese if everyone gets it!)

Bbq1 · 20/09/2020 15:51

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch

It's different. It works with supermarket supply systems, not against them.
Fair enough. I have no problem with people getting extra in because I do it myself. The scenes witnessed in shops in March were absolutely shocking, people fighting over loo roll. I do see the point of prepping though. I guess If it saves going out for a bit then great.
CrunchyNutNC · 20/09/2020 15:52

@JamieLeeCurtains

It doesn't take much, but pictures of people with 24 packs of loo roll sell more newspapers.

What people forget is that the extra bits a prepper buys every week have already been budgeted for by the supermarket. They expect to sell x packets of rice in the week based on previous sales, including the extra preppers buy, and the peppers regular extra bits will be in the system.

What empties the shelves are when people who have not, until now, been buying extra rice every week all buy an extra packet within the space of a few days. Their extra packet of rice is a new purchase, and hasn't been budgeted for by the supermarket.

I suspect/hope they'll be better the next time round. In the same way they prepare for Christmas based on data from previous christmases i imagine they'll be on the lookout for signs of another lockdown and will know which lines they'll need extra of. They also have experience of how to manipulate us when buying so perhaps they help can keep shelves full by tempting us with special offers on plentiful lines, and keep things which are in tighter supply full price. Etc.

Shitfuckoh · 20/09/2020 15:54

@MRex
Their black pepper cheese really is divine!

JingsMahBucket · 20/09/2020 15:56

@MRex thank you! I know, I was also hesitating asking publicly on the boards due to fear of them selling out! Fingers crossed you get your favourites before others do. :)

Bbq1 · 20/09/2020 15:58

@gamerchick

Is prepping the same as panic buying?

No it isn't. I've prepped quietly because I knew what would come if cases went up and lockdown threats happened. I can now stay out of supermarkets for a while if I need to, just like the last time.

I will never forget the time KFC ran out of chicken and people rang the police. Collectively, people are a bit entitled and thick. You don't unlearn that shit overnight.

That sounds sensible. Seeing people coming out of the supermarket in March with 10 multipacks of loo roll and 10 giant sized bags of pasta probably gives preppers (who aren't doing that) a bad name. Genuine question: What duea everyone use pasta for? I have never worked out why it flew off the shelves. We use it with an occasional spag bol or an even more occasional pasta bake.
