Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

I had a look on Tesco today and there were plenty of slots available for the next three or so weeks in my area.
Scaremongering so the papers and TV news have something to report.

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 20:50

It perhaps depends on area in which case the press should specify that. Places with higher rates would see higher demand I imagine.

PhilSwagielka · 19/09/2020 20:55

No. I didn't stockpile last time. I'm a bit worried about potential Brexit shortages but panic buying last time was unnecessary and just caused people loads of stress.

Things are out of stock because people are panic buying.

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 21:01

@PhilSwagielka what's out of stock? A few people have said some things are low but not out of stock I might have missed something there though.

Dunno. OP said it first.

I did notice one shop being low on olive oil lately but that was it.

gvt know that if essential things like power & food supply go down the country will be in chaos very quickly and it will be very difficult to restore order...they would always prioritize these things

Like they prioritised PPE, test and trace and safeguarding of care homes.
Oh, wait....

LetsBeSensible · 19/09/2020 21:44

Oh well if people are panic buying now I’m glad I “stockpiled” over the last few months buying one additional item to put in the cupboard. Which is what prepping is.

I’m disabled thanks to covid. I can’t get on the priority list because I didn’t have a shielding letter last time round. I would get a shielding letter now but no store are adding anyone to lists because there’s no lockdown at present.

Meanwhile my food budget is £60 per month. I do not want to pay the expensive prices of co-op delivery, it’s double the price of Lidl if not more. Home delivery is £35 minimum spend from Iceland and £40 + delivery elsewhere. I physically could not queue to enter a shop. No nearby friends and family. Covid took my voice so I can’t call Tesco to beg to be on their list.

It’s a no-brainier for me to buy one thing extra and leave myself a bit short now, than to be in a situation where I have to order a month’s worth of food in one go, or pay through the nose for basics.

goteam · 19/09/2020 21:45

@Oldbagface I am assuming that posters like @Tootletum are projecting somewhat. There are a few aggressive slightly unhinged posters getting very wound up about other people doing something that has zero effect on them. It was the same early on in lockdown. I posted on similar threads in the spring and there were a lot of posters who hadn't thought to prepare and were angry and hitting out at those who did and conflating sensible preparation with panic buying.

Oldbagface · 19/09/2020 21:52

Thank you @goteam. I think you are dead on there.

Much appreciation for your support Grin

I reported Tootletum (and I'm sure I wasn't the only one).

@Oldbagface it would appear that many would think YABU, but if you are, I am too. Hey ho.

My favourite takeaway from this thread is 'snarling arseholes'. Perfect.

Oldbagface · 19/09/2020 22:09

Thank you @MilesJuppIsMyBitch. Honestly I rarely lose my rag but that poster is the type who profers the survival of the fittest bullshit. So yes, I will ensure we have a supply of nutritious staples to keep is as well as possible.

Snarling arseholes is a perfect description.

My take away from this is fuck em Grin

The shops won’t close. I just don’t get this mindset at all.

If I have to isolate for 14 days - and I am a teacher, this is very likely - then I cannot leave the house. A shop could be open and stacked to the rafters, but if I can't leave the house, it's no help.

So I have 14 days' worth of food and other essentials in the house. That way, if I am sent home to isolate on Monday morning, or DD is (bubble of 250) or DH (bubble of 1,500), we have food and don't have to risk anyone else by having to go out to the shop.

And if u come down with symptoms and are unable to source a test or have to wait days for the results?

Wouldn't u at least like a few days supply?

Not the point I know, but just in case it's ever needed Iceland will deliver £25 worth of groceries. They just charge £2 rather than the free delivery.

I know to a lot of people £8 isn't much, but it can be the difference between affording a delivery and not sometimes.

PattyPan · 19/09/2020 22:22

I don’t have a pantry, I live in a small 2 up 2 down with a tiny kitchen. I store extra stuff under the stairs and in boxes on top of the fridge and wall cabinets.

Also, to posters who are complaining that threads like this cause anxiety for others. Have you never considered that prepping is a way to soothe anxiety for many of us? It’s a small way to be in control in this chaotic world. I find it reassuring to know that I can provide for my family for a few weeks whatever else may happen.

PattyPan · 19/09/2020 22:25

Also to add, a colleague (we are key workers) had to self isolate for the full 2 weeks because the lab lost his family’s tests. If he hadn’t been prepared he wouldn’t have been able to feed his toddler. He and his wife are not from this country originally so no family nearby to help.

hitchhikingghost · 19/09/2020 22:35

Just a curious question for all those who seem to be offended by people stocking enough food for their family to cope for a couple of weeks. Do you stock things like extra batteries, a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, flashlights, candles, blankets etc? Or will you just have it delivered when you need it? I honestly don’t understand the anger from some people here, basic prepping is something everyone need to think about.

Happygogoat · 19/09/2020 22:40

What do you think happens if everyone (or even half of people) are like you and buy "a couple of extras" unnecessarily each shop? It runs out twice as fast. Hence the shortages. Hence the panic. Then people suffer.

This is the start of the problem.

You can still go to the supermarket in full lockdown. If everyone did as they usually do there is no problem.

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/09/2020 22:42

And if you are contacted and told u were in contact with someone who tested positive do you go to the super market regardless ?

I cannot go to the supermarket if sent home to isolate. In that way it is stricter than lockdown. As a teacher, with no PPE, any positive case in my bubble sees me sent home immediately to self-0isolate for 14 days, without leaving the house. Dityto DH (bubble of 1,5000 and DD (bubble of 250).

Do not confuse lockdown with self-isolation - the latter is essentially house arrest.

hitchhikingghost · 19/09/2020 22:47

@Happygogoat you have missed the point, it’s a world pandemic - many people, sick and elderly, are at risk of dying if they catch covid-19, and so do not want to go to the shops even if they’re open. Good for you if you don’t have to think about it, but don’t be ignorant to others.
