Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

@Oliversmumsarmy

Where does everyone put all this stuff.

Do you have spare kitchen cabinets just in case you think you need to stockpile

Just in my kitchen cupboards. There are only two of us to prep for though.

We have gone digital and donated all our books and DVDs and CDs to charity. The cupboard they used to sit in is now empty so we're putting it in there.

@Oliversmumsarmy in the loft mostly. Our kitchen is tiny.
wherearemychickens · 19/09/2020 16:33

Most of ours is under our bed, plus a small chest freezer in an outhouse which is also where the tins live. Toilet roll in the loft.

Twillow · 19/09/2020 16:33

@aOliversmumsarmy
it's non-perishables, so you could use under-the-stairs/airing cupboard, under the bed, garage. It does give you a feeling of security and {smugly} organisation!!

Namechangeme87 · 19/09/2020 16:35

No because even in the full lockdown last time even when everyone went fkin crazy n buying everything there was nothing I couldn’t get hold of during my normal weekly shop. So perhaps people didn’t go as crazy as the rest of the country here

netsybetsy · 19/09/2020 16:36

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch

In fact, people should only fill their bird-feeders with one days worth of bird-seed, in the case the bastard birds SELFISHLY STOCKPILE. Greedy, feathery cocks.
Grin not to mention SQUIRRELS!!! Those selfish proactive little fuckers storing nuts for the winter. It's just me, me, me with those guys!! 🐿🐿🥜🌰
justanotherneighinparadise · 19/09/2020 16:38

FFS no I haven’t. I’d rather fast for three weeks than panic but.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 19/09/2020 16:40

@netsybetsy don't even get me STARTED on squirrels. Those furry arseholes not only stockpile, but probably Mark-up the nuts & sell them on!! 🤬

(I've never used that emoji before).

Yesterday 23:15 @CasuallyMasculine**

I hate supermarkets, so tend to shop once a month, filling up my freezer and larder.

Do you never eat fresh fruit and vegetables? Grim.

@Casuallymasculine you do realise you can buy fresh fruit and veg in places other than supermarkets? I prefer to use my local greengrocers and bakers every few days and then I only need to go to the supermarket once a month.

Oliversmumsarmy · 19/09/2020 16:44

This might be why I don’t prep. I don’t have any of those areas free of stuff

And as I don’t have books or CDs in the first place as there is nowhere to put them them I can’t make room.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/09/2020 16:48

One apologises that the bog roll
one bought in October 2018 caused shortages 18 months later. Incidentally, I didn't need to buy loo roll between March and June.

We had a vulnerable child so didn't go out and couldn't get a delivery for about 6 weeks. We lived on the Brexit stash and a few deliveries of milk and bread by church.

That sounds like something they would do for sure!

Here's a nutty joke to cheer us up: Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a pyramid covered in chocolate and hazelnuts. It’s believed to be the tomb of Pharaoh Rocher. Grin

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/09/2020 16:51

Never mind squirrels uts the leaf cutter ants u meed to worry about. Lifting several times their own body weight and able to strip a tree in 24 hours and there being frickin millions of them at it...i mean how much fungus do they need to grow. Seriously.. ultimate in hoarding abilities

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 16:59

I keep my Christmas chocolate and sweets stash in the drawer in the base of my bed. Extra toiletries are in there too along with the bathroom cabinets. Everything else on the shelves in the pantry. I bought one of these to give me lots of storage space. It fits perfectly and is accessible. Before then it was in lidded boxes under the sideboard and under dd1's bed.

To ask if you have prepped for the second wave
CrunchyNutNC · 19/09/2020 17:01

@NotAKaren

No, I think people should have realised that shops will remain open after the last experience
They might notakaren, but you might need to queue (again) and this time it'll be winter - queuing outside in cold and wet won't be fun.

I honestly don't understand the intolerance on MN to having a reasonable stock of food and supplies.

I can't get my head around the idea that it is supposedly better to rely on delivery slots (which were in short supply) or volunteers/friends than it is to take some responsibility for being adequately provisioned*. Hmm

*I.e. those who can, obviously there will be people who cannot build a 2 week stock of food.

icode · 19/09/2020 17:02

I have!
When Covid hit I only had a days worth of food in the house. I used to eat out a lot or brought food on a daily basis.

I am clinically vulnerable and was left a bit stuffed having to rely on others to help me.

I have since brought extra items like washing up liquid, loo roll, bleach, pasta & rice etc.

I might go hungry but house and clothes will be clean Grin

Dominicgoings · 19/09/2020 17:03

Ok ignoring the snooty, condescending arsiness of some responses, lets try and get the point across again.

The news about a ‘second wave’ really only gained momentum in the media yesterday/today and regardless of what your own personal or professional viewpoint was, has caused huge amounts of anxiety.

No one gives a monkeys arse about how many bags of pasta or jars of olive oil mayo people accumulate over the year. There are threads on MN devoted to the very topic.

The point that has been made, sneered at and shot down repeatedly by those lacking in any empathy, is that, given the fucking epidemic of deteriorating mental health that Covid has already caused, threads like these are unhelpful and risk causing serious anxiety and distress to people who now, on this day, or tomorrow CAN’T ( for reasons previously outlined) rush out to stockpile/panic buy.

Why is that so impossible for people to acknowledge?

I LOVE that. What an excellent way for that man to spend his time Grin
Whatwouldscullydo · 19/09/2020 17:12

Why is the onus on people to censor their thoughts and feelings and ideas and be told what they can and cant talk about rather than those people who cant deal with reading about things to just not read them.

Its on the appropriate topic with a heading that gives more than enough of a clue as to what its about to be abke to avoid altogether

ChavvySexPond · 19/09/2020 17:13

@eeeyoresmiles

We were down to our second to last loo roll when Ocado cancelled our delivery back in April. We borrowed a 9 pack from my friend who was better prepared.

I bet your friend was delighted when you returned that pack...

She won't hear of it. Oh I see what you mean. Grin."Borrowed" like borrowing a fiver. She wouldn't expect the same fiver back. Wink

She has posh branded quilted too. We were ruined for the el cheapo we usually have. Shock

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 19/09/2020 17:14

I bet squirrels bang on about their nuts to the other animals as well.

So the post should have read, “I only shop in the supermarket once a month”.

If you’re popping to the bakers and greengrocers every couple of days (where do you live? Camberwick Green? Grin) then you don’t just shop once a month.

mosscarpet · 19/09/2020 17:20

what is with MN? Calling people selfish, stupid, idiots, pricks....
Becasue some people want to have more food in their house than others. Some people want to be prepared if they have to self isolate for 2 weeks and have no other way to get food ? And yes, last time I was totally unable to get a delivery slot from ANYWHERE for my 87 year old dad with a lung condition who lives hundreds of miles away. So have I made sure he has a "stockpile" this time round? You bet I have. I work in the NHS , my dh is a teacher. We are a family of 6 (possibly 7 if dd lands back from uni again) Again, no slots here at all for delivery last time, no one we know who could bring us food if we need to isolate, which is highly likely given our jobs and the fact we have 4 dc at school - so do I have a "stockpile"? Too bloody right I do. I have been buying it since June. The majority has come from amazon or costco - where things are intentionally sold in bulk.
So, I know whatever happens my elderly frail father wont go without basics and we can abide by isolating guidelines if we need to , without having to go to a shop, risking infecting other people.
Does that make me a stupid, selfish, idiotic prick? I think not!
Personally, I think poeple who have been in a position to prepare to any degree (and I appreciate not everyone is) but then don't are being complacent and somewhat selfish (see earlier posts about Sweden and Switzerland )- but I generally don't go on threads calling them names - I just scroll on by and accept people have different views and make different life choices!!!
