Started today sorting out bits for a booked in tip run, ending it thinking "do I need to prep for a lockdown"

Does anyone else feel like today has accelerated from bimbling along trying to do your Covid bit to, oh god not again. In like 6 small hours.

The fact that people are surprised by this shows partly why it happened! People just switched off, largely. Like it was all over already. The cases curve has been rising for 2 weeks now. And that's after we've seen very clear second waves in nearby European countries. So how anyone can think this has suddenly come from nowhere, I don't know.

@CaraDuneRedux thank you. Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 18/09/2020 21:06

People worry about no jobs, fucked economy etc etc... does any of that matter to you if your parents , vulnerable family/friends are dead ?

If no . Then carry on with your life .
If yes, then lock yourselves down.

No right I or wrong because people are inherently selfish. Just do what is best for you. Sod the strange old person on the bus you don't know .

CaraDuneRedux · 18/09/2020 21:07

This is a good comparison site for looking at the different countries and comparing data (3rd plot down, normalised by population, is probably the most useful). Based on American CDC data.

In the screen grab I've highlighted the UK, and you can see we're about 3 weeks behind France (pale cyan colour) and maybe 6 weeks behind Spain (muddy mustard colour).

If only it were that clear cut, squirrel. I was talking to my dad this morning - he's early 80s. He's painfully aware of the fact that at his age he may well die in the next 2 to 3 years anyway, and doesn't really want to spend what little time he has left under house arrest, unable to visit me or his grandson, unable to do all the things he loves (going to concerts, socialising with friends).

Of course I want him to stay safe. Of course I want him not to be exposed to infection. Of course I want to stop fucking idiots having house parties with 50 people crammed into a sweaty room dancing in close proximity to one another, then going out into the community the next day to spread whatever germs they've caught at their superspreader event.

But at the same time, when you get to my dad's age, it's not so much "what's a year or so under lockdown." It could quite literally be a life sentence under house arrest.

DowntonEstate · 18/09/2020 21:18

Nope. Can’t afford to stock up. Couldn’t last time either. Tried to shop once a week but often ended up going twice a week. Will do the same last time. Between family and friends if any of us need to self isolate I’m sure we will manage.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/09/2020 21:19

@disorganisedsecretsquirrel I think that's a simplistic way of looking at it. Personally I only have one vulnerable family member and that's my elderly grandad. I don't want him to die and I would be devastated if he did. But regardless of that, I cannot stop working as I need to keep a roof over our heads and DS needs to be at school getting his education.

WinifredSanderson · 18/09/2020 21:26

I'm not doing anything differently. There's no point panicking. I've done my bit for Covid prevention and I'll carry on making my own risk assessment for myself and my DC. I haven't watched the news in months and I don't intend to start. I couldn't afford to stock up first time round and I still can't, so it'll be weekly shop as normal for us. We managed ok before I'm sure we will again.

Splendidseptember · 18/09/2020 21:29

My dds loved being at home, I'm thrilled they have had some normality, re connected with friends and teachers, it's set them up, even with lockdown, to carry on.
Hopefully there would be some proper support this time, and they won't be simply abandoned.
Our school said it would put work on line, but it's useless without a teacher teaching it, on line or in a recording.

I don't think lockdown would go on for as long again either. They will be different, Hopefully people can still work and shops stay open just with strict measures again.
On the plus side, we have all the equipment now! I remember in March staff on the tills at waitrose had nothing and were not even allowed extra breaks to wash their hands.

Hazelmazel · 18/09/2020 21:34

I've been thinking it since schools went back. I work at a school and seeing the lack of social distancing and the speed that the cold/sore throat bug has zipped through the school community, it seems inevitable. Even with all the rules and processes in place, the kids are just being kids. The bubble concept with a year group as one bubble and minimal social distancing needed within that year is just so flawed. We have a small community and all the schools around are interlinked with siblings being at this school and that school. Essentially, there are so many interconnections that the whole school community is one giant bubble.

Angrymum22 · 18/09/2020 21:51

Caradune the graph you have posted is based on days since 1case/million so you can not use it to determine whether we are behind or in front of other countries. It shows we are on a slower rate of growth.

covetingthepreciousthings · 18/09/2020 22:00

I want to take my kids out of school . They were back a week before DS came down with something and we're in to our first week of self isolation while he waits for his test result.

We are in the same boat, they managed 4 days back at school before we were in isolation awaiting tests. DH and I are seriously considering homeschooling now, at least for the next year. I think the kids would be better mental health wise having the stability of at home life than being in and out of isolation if this is a sign of what's to come.

MadamHoooch · 18/09/2020 22:04

I thought that email ocado sent was hugely irresponsible. It will just become a self fulfilling prophecy

RunningNinja79 · 18/09/2020 22:05

I think its been brewing more so this past week. I also wonder if this time next week it will have accelerated so much more.

Last Saturday I was watching the Proms and they mentioned about hopefully coming back next year which got me thinking about those events at the start of all this that have been cancelled to next year and I wonder if they will be able to go ahead. Is early next year a write off too?

I also noticed tonight while doing my weekly shop that the pasta aisle was looking a bit bare. I meant to take a note of the toilet rolls, but forgot. It feels like it did in mid March now.

I'm just hoping that we have more knowledge now and there are more people who are willing to accept things than 6/7 months ago so it might not be too bad. Anyway I really can't see how the government can afford another lockdown like before.

Angrymum22 · 18/09/2020 22:05

I have screen shot a view with France, Germany, Spain and Portugal. It shows the infection numbers from approx case zero in each country. The UK lockdown measures have kept the curve flatter for longer in effect. We are also testing in much greater numbers so figures may well be more accurate that other European countries. UK has done nearly 20million tests compared with Germany that have done around 13 million tests.
Unfortunately we did not test in the community extensively until the end of April when the initial peak was over. We will never know how many people were infected in Feb/March. Judging by the current infection rate compared with hospitalisations it may well have been very high. And to anyone replying that it’s now young people becoming infected now, I have never come across a virus that selectively targets different age groups throughout an outbreak.
During the initial phase when there were no measures in place all age groups would have been infected not just the elderly and vulnerable who were hospitalised and died. The fact that serious cases are still low suggests the measures in place are working to protect the vulnerable now.
It is not the governments responsibility to protect your vulnerable relatives. That is up to each of us.

@TheWindOnTheMoon

For me it was when Ocado emailed this morning to say slots are getting booked up quickly and to book ahead. It reminded me of those early lockdown weeks when shopping suddenly became stressful with an hour's queue to websites...

I had the same email and booked another slot. We were on their shielding list and hope we will still continue to get slots if there's another lockdown, or whatever this shit government of ours plans to do.

I think this is really wrong of ocado. It seems like they are supporting panic buying by feeding on peoples' fears. When I last looked they had loads of slots left, maybe they are just trying to fill them.
CaraDuneRedux · 18/09/2020 22:14

Well, you can if you do a bit of arithmetic as you go - it's up to date, so the latest data point for each country is "today" (or possibly "yesterday" - not sure exactly when it updates, or in which time zone). So you can work out how many days ago relative to "now" France (for instance) was on the same number of cases as the UK is now.
Floatyboat · 18/09/2020 22:18

Nope...I've stopped listening to the news. My mental health has improved loads

Lol, so you come on here instead?!

Keepdistance · 18/09/2020 22:20

Here too managed 8d only!
Negative test.
I haven't told the school as im not sure about going back anyway.
Tbh im annoyed with them. Because theyve increased bubbles unnecessarily. More than doubling risks. And i know that in the other class theres a sibling of a SI child.
But anyway dc2 is coughing now so? Im not testing them it is more likely the same virus, so wont waste a test and they werent in school during incubation anyway.

So wrong not to allow them to study at home!
I didnt think it would be this fast but did suspect due to everyone going abroad. I also feel cross as people making us ill (risking the whole class lives etc) by not SD or going aboad/soft play etc even though it's allowed.
We hardly had any cases recentky here but already 2 in the secondary.

KetoPenguin · 18/09/2020 22:25

I agree it's been quite a sudden change from we definitely don't want a second lockdown to we are considering one next week. Still I don't think there is any need to panic and prep for it. Shops are full and there will be no restrictions on food shopping the same as before and in local lockdown areas. There should be more home deliveries available and the systems are already in place.

MitziK · 18/09/2020 22:44

They've being doing that from before they switched to M&S. The first couple of weeks of school are always crap, anyhow, but the change in supplier has impacted deliveries even more than usual.
Nat6999 · 18/09/2020 23:16

We have been living with my 81 year old mum since last Christmas due to me being ill. Ds went back to school to start sixth form two weeks ago. I hope for his sake that we don't go back in to lockdown & schools aren't closed whilst worrying about him bringing it home to my mum. We have started to put a few extra items on the online shopping lists every time, stocked up the pantry shelves, the freezer, a couple of extra packs of loo rolls, bleach etc. If we have room next month we are going to buy a turkey crown ready for Christmas & frozen sprouts, parsnips, Christmas pudding so we are prepared if online orders get harder to get.
