What would another national lockdown consist of

When they say they cannot rule out another national lockdown, as a last resort, what does this mean?

Will it be the same as the first lockdown? E.g no leaving houses unless for exercise or essential shopping etc, will all schools and non essential businesses be closed up again?

I hate 2020.

Whatever they do they need to actually enforce it with proper penalties and no exclusions - not even for Boris' mates who need eye tests.
But they wont do that - they are not even enforcing mask wearing

ListeningQuietly · 18/09/2020 19:35

people will be told to WFH again
and those who can't?
those who have had no income since March ?
how are they supposed to afford food?

ListeningQuietly · 18/09/2020 19:37

Schools open, go to work, no other social interaction outside of your own home unless you're spending money.
how about the millions of people whose work involves interacting with people

  • catering
  • exercise
  • hospitality
  • entertainment
  • sport
  • leisure
what do they do ?
HeyMacarona · 18/09/2020 19:37

What happened to the idea of closing pubs so schools could stay open?

I’m in NW and a lot of people I’ve spoken to today have said the restrictions will not affect them as they refuse to change their plans. A few have said if they are expected to mix in work places it won’t stop them elsewhere.

Maybe I’m feeling negative at the news today but I honestly don’t see the NE NW restrictions working

It'll affect their plans if they want to stay out boozing past 10pm (barring illegal parties)
HeyMacarona · 18/09/2020 19:44

I doubt it as many of the pubs in our area were open illegally during lockdown, that’s not counting the number of raves/parties

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 18/09/2020 19:48

All socialising stopped and maybe pubs and restaurants closed. I doubt non essential shops will close as they will want people to spend with Christmas coming up

Redlocks28 · 18/09/2020 19:56

If all we do is go to work and come home again-with no meeting in friends/family homes and only meeting if we go to pubs/restaurants, I would imagine loads of people will go back to Zoom quizzes and staying in their homes! We would probably only be spending money on food like during lockdown.

ListeningQuietly · 18/09/2020 20:01

If all we do is go to work and come home again
So what happens to the millions of people who have earned nothing since March ?
What do they live on ?

Yep-it’ll probably be a shitshow.
YoBeaches · 18/09/2020 20:22

They've been using the phrase 'circuit breaker' to describe a 2 week more formal lockdown with then continued minimal socialisation, and repeat if necessary through the winter. They can't afford to close anything down for any long period of time.

But I'm curious this time as to how come the cases are coming from the north and down the country. Why would that be? Last time it seemed to be London outwards.

monkeytennis97 · 18/09/2020 20:28

@Vinorosso74

I couldn't handle the schools closing again! The government have been very keen to get people back to the workplace and some employers have followed that which I don't think is right. If people can work from home then they still should.
Like DH and I, secondary teachers? Can we work from home please!?

You’re screaming into the wind on this web site. It’s full of lockdown fanatics, a mix of middle class people who are in safe wfh jobs and shielders. They’re happy for working class people to starve to death as long as it protects them from the scary Covid. Personally I think public tolerance especially young people, of all this bullshit is at the limits. Any attempt to lock down will result in, at the least, people ignoring, at worst, rioting and looting.
onedayinthefuture · 18/09/2020 20:33

@KnobChops you have totally summed up mumsnet! So pleased there is someone else (ok I know there are a few) but on the whole this place is so middle class privilege, whining, too much time to think, bitter and cruel oddballs.

Pinkmakeupbag · 18/09/2020 20:34

Knobchops I'm inclined to agree.

Crime has gone through the roof round here since we came out of lockdown.

Once furlough ends and they’re all out of work the shit will hit the fan.

We locked down for 4 fucking months!! Kids missed almost 6 months of school. And yet here we are again. It didn’t work the first time round so why would it work again. As soon as you come out of it the cases will rise. It’s what viruses do. And I work in the NHS, many of my colleagues were against lockdown and we haven’t changed our minds.

Where will the money come from?

Yep, people with clear self centred agendas. Middle class privilege in action.

mytimeonline · 18/09/2020 20:40

We are on a second wave here
The majority of cases are in government controlled isolation.
We have to socially distance in public
Wear masks on buses
Keep 2 metres in supermarkets, workers wearing face masks and gloves
Q cards for contact tracing in all businesses door or window on entry
School we meet outside do not go into the school unless using the q card and sanistier
Many people seem to automatically abide by the rules. Some do not given impatience or share feral behaviour these people are usually eye balled into line or businesses have a job to make this happen.
Swimming pool has limited patrons and no showering.
Hospital visits or appointments are only if your healthy to attend and using the covid tracing app

listenquietly.
The people in close contact wear face masks and some gloves and or sanitiser, covid tracing app.
A few Flight attendants are working in supermarkets until things settle down they take what they can for work until they can return to some sort of normal.

ListeningQuietly · 18/09/2020 20:41

@KnobChops
You made me laugh.
If only the people I am most worried about were working class

we own our own home outright
we have decent pension funds that we cannot touch yet
and ISAs that are locked into a falling market
but no income since the spring
and none due till next spring

because Zoom does not fill theatres and venues and conference halls
as not all professional jobs are clicks on a screen
but at least ours cannot be outsourced to India you smug gits

notevenat20 · 18/09/2020 20:43

Schools open, go to work, no other social interaction outside of your own home unless you're spending money.

I think you are right.

Redlocks28 · 18/09/2020 20:59

The money to buy our food will come from the jobs we spend all day doing.

Oh that's ok then. Sounds like this lockdown is set to be much better then the last.

ListeningQuietly · 18/09/2020 21:35

The money to buy our food will come from the jobs we spend all day doing
If your job can be done on a laptop from home, it can be done from India

For the millions of us whose jobs CANNOT be done from home
so income has STOPPED since March
what do you suggest ?

ListeningQuietly · 18/09/2020 21:35

Paid for how ?
