If you're not in the UK, what is the local opinion on governments covid strategy?

Badly worded probably but there has been lots of negativity towards how Boris and chums have dealt with it all. I wondered what those overseas feels the consensus is towards your governments handling of covid?

Sheer nosiness I might add

It’s been a complete shit show tbh.

FunnysInLaJardin · 18/09/2020 13:36

Our covid strategy has been really good. Borders shut in March, then carefully re-opened in July with full track and tracing and testing on all arrivals. Proper fines and follow up for those self isolating.

Now have the ability to process 2000 tests a day for a population of 100,000 with 12 hour turn around time.

Very low levels of covid in the community.

I am very glad I'm not in the UK!

I live in the northwest of England.

@Delatron

Where are you *@FunnysInLaJardin*
I'm in Jersey.

Just hoping it stays this way, although if numbers go up I suspect borders will be closed again as most of the new infections are through travel

Delatron · 18/09/2020 13:57

Ah sounds like they have it under control @FunnysInLaJardin. Hope cases stay low for you.

BaruFisher · 18/09/2020 13:57

Honestly? Here in Australia the U.K. looks like a total shit show. Great sympathy for you guys being led by Boris.
We haven’t had a perfect record but even with the issue in Melbourne, we’ve had less than 1k deaths from a population of 25m (6 deaths from pop of 5 m in my state).
Melbourne (and Victoria) have had a second long and strict lockdown and it’s been tough on them but it’s working. Decisive leadership makes a big difference (at state level)

Delatron · 18/09/2020 13:58

Completely agree about decisive leadership.
And actually being a leader....

TheHoneyFactory · 18/09/2020 14:03

In Aus. personally quite suprised (after the shitshow terror of a fiery summer) by fed and state govts responses.
Vic is unfortunate and 2nd lockdown must be very hard but now coming under control and hoping that because of those awesome victorians doing some very very hard yards, later this spring/summer Aus can return to relative normal (with international borders closed).
i have been super impressed with my own state govt (SA - all praise St. Nicola!)

Rolling from drought to insane fires into a global pandemic has been incredibly trying (an understatement)

But testing is very accessible, track and tracing is solid, guidance and info is clear and available. our health system is great and some real positive change will come as a result of these events.
I hate morrison/ dutton and co but i do feel confident they do not want a economic catastrophe and will dig/build our way out and we will be ok
i do feel very lucky to be in Aus. i am very worried for UK/Euro based family.

Dauphinois · 18/09/2020 14:07

My brother is in Georgia, USA and thinks our government has done a brilliant job compared to theirs.

It's all relative I guess!

cologne4711 · 18/09/2020 14:09

What LeJardin doesn't point out is that the cost of the tests is crippling Jersey and they're talking about charging tourists for them. It is quite easy to lock down a small island though - Guernsey and IOM are covid-free but they've not been letting people in at all, except allowing travel between themselves and quarantine is very strict especially on IOM.

The testing thing in the UK is a bit of a debacle, but it's partly down to people asking for tests who don't need them, or organisations requiring tests who don't need them.

Well not quite crippling tbh. I think the cost has been about £5m.

They have just given the whole population £100 spend local cards at a cost of £11m to help boost the local economy and so as you can see the testing cost is fairly minimal in context.

They are talking about charging for them when other jurisdictions do. They didn't want to charge initially as they wanted to help boost the tourist industry and not be out of step with other countries.

I'm not sure I buy the British Govs claim that the reason for the there being no tests available is because people have been asking for them when they don't need them. It's typical of the UK gov to blame other people when things go wrong. I'm thinking of healthcare staff being blamed for over use of PPE here btw.

Thanks, we are all keeping our fingers crossed. No-one wants a second lock down!
Bubblesbubblesmybubbles · 18/09/2020 18:19

I have to say I'd much rather live in Australia right now. Weve made the decision to live to stricter measures from now just in case.
