Toys in school

DS is 6 and is upset he can't play with the Lego in his classroom. It's all there for them to see but they can't touch any of it. I find this very sad. Can anyone please send me a link with scientific evidence that the virus less likely to be passed on through surfaces? I want to approach the school about it. It prob won't do any good but I can try. It seems almost cruel to have the toys stacked up in the classroom but the kids can't play.
Thanks.

Our school has bubbles of 60 reception kids all touching everything. And other year group.
We are now off for however long and had to have a covid test.
I do think surface transmission is less a risk than airborne though.

I would be asking them to remove it. They won't have time to keep cleaning it properly.

I think it probably would take you the same length of time as someone else to Google and find research on this subject.

@Itsabeautifuldayheyhey.. yes fair enough! Thanks.

My DS has started reception and they still have the vast majority of toys out which I am pleased about. They have just removed soft furnishings. However he was very upset that the binoculars have gone, as he knows the setting from nursery!! I am of the opinion that the kids and adults will spread the virus and not really the toys though

You're asking the school to take additional risks, when they are trying their best to keep staff and children safe and follow the DfE guidance. It's an unfair position to put them in.

Lockdownseperation · 18/09/2020 12:29

You need to ask the school for a copy of their covid risk assessment and compare it to the latest DfE guidelines.

I work in a year one class and we still allow our children to play with the lego and everything else in the construction area. To be fair I witnessed a child the other day pick her nose and then stroke her friends face. I think touching lego is the least of our worries!

*I asked both children to was hands and cheek straight away

Yes it seems unfair that toys are allowed for the younger kids, reception and year 1, but not allowed for year 2. It's been a tough new term so far for them.

Year 2? Do they normally play much with Lego at school? My yr2 is mainly working with some outside of play. Toys were being phased out by the end of the first term in year 1 except for Friday afternoon golden time. They all complained about the jump from reception to y1 then got on with it. They’re all complaining this year about the y1 to 2 jump, they’ll quickly move on.

@Triangularbubble her 6 year old maybe in year 1.

Are they definitely not allowed to play with it for Covid reasons? Could it be due to the new year group they are only allowed to for treats/gold time type days.

BadlydoneHelen · 18/09/2020 13:12

Our infant lego goes in laundry bags and is washed overnight as necessary. If used on a Friday afternoon for golden time it doesn't really need to be as it won't be touched till the following week. I'd be surprised if they were using it much in year 2 anyway- the weathers good so no wet play at the moment(thank god!)

Ah that could be it! He's moaning he had to do 17 pieces of work in one day with no play! So it must be less to do with Covid and more about transitioning from year 1 to 2. I'll have to find out if they get a golden Fri afternoon..I've never heard of that.
