From the BBC

Usually if they say they're considering a thing it's probably going to happen - they seem to let these bits of information out to soften us up so it won't be such a shock when it comes to pass.

Ugh.

@eufycurious

Yesterday they were denying rumours of a two week lockdown, now this. Why can't they just be honest about things instead of treating us all like children?
They are doing the drip feed again, like last time. Remember they took about a week to hint at a lockdown, ask us not to go to restaurants and bars etc, then tell us, then force us..

Same again, they are planning a national lockdown but making it look like a series of regional lockdowns, and building up to it slowly so that by the time it actually happens everyone is expecting it

My cottage is booked for second week of the October holidays 17th to the following Saturday, I will be really unhappy if I can’t even go to see my sister.

Lockdown is just kicking the can down the road. 2 weeks lockdown and then relax measures again = rise In cases again. Absolutely useless tool. The countries that locked down hard are still seeing a huge rise so what good did it do them?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 18/09/2020 14:57

There is no way they can ask all businesses to close again either, people won’t be able to live and businesses won’t survive another time

Yep only way out of this mess is a vaccine.. I reckon mid 2021 at the very earliest before one is available.

My guess is (although it’s not really a guess as it’s always been in the Imperial modelling from March) they’ll attempt to impose these circuit breaker lockdowns to coincide with school holidays. October HT extended, again over Xmas, based on likely hospital capacity. October HT probably too late though so I’d imagine they’ll need to bring forward.

TheBeatGoesOn · 18/09/2020 15:07

I think if we go into national lockdown, people will still be able to go to work which kind of defeats the whole point but with furlough gone, there is no other alternative. People can't go weeks with no pay.

This is shaping up to be a fun christmas!

@CloudsCanLookLikeSheep yup been their psychological approach to every change hasn’t it! Something is leaked, then it’s followed by a complete denial, followed by gentle nudge nudge approach till it’s implemented.

Mushroom management!

I think lockdown is preferable to repeated isolations due to test and trace which will happen if infection rates are high enough (definite possibility with schools open). At least you can leave the house during lockdown.

sirfredfredgeorge · 18/09/2020 15:47

New figures today showing there have been over 300,000 fewer cancer referrals and over 100,000 fewer treatments since March.

This is brilliant news, Have they determined if it's COVID that prevents and reverses cancer, or was it just lock down reducing it? It's tricky 'cos if we don't know which, we won't know if we should let covid continue, or if we should lock down everyone again to cure the cancer?

secretllama · 18/09/2020 16:04

Circuit break... 🤦‍♀️

Is this going to be another buzz phrase to add to the list of pandemic phrases i never want to hear again ?? Please no!!!

Oaktree55 · 18/09/2020 16:18

@secretllama it’s how Singapore refer to their short sharp restrictions which work v well. Hopefully U.K. might learn from them.

Pugdoglife · 18/09/2020 16:23

I really don't see the point of a two week lockdown if schools and workplaces are still open, it's just going to damage the economy even more and have very little benefit.
Numbers have risen sharply in the few weeks since schools opened, we didn't see the same sharp rise when shops and cafes etc opened, so I'm not that destroying those businesses would help at all.

Oaktree55 · 18/09/2020 16:39

@Pugdoglife I think they’re trying to plan it for Half Term (extending school closures for 2weeks)

However my personal opinion is it’ll be required before HT and their hand will be forced.

That's just fabulous for those of us with kids, and teachers who live nowhere near their extended family and would plan visits during those times. I also have a year 13 who desperately needs to visit some universities - for self guided tours - and h/t would have been ideal for this.

cologne4711 · 18/09/2020 17:11

We don't need another lockdown.

We need people to follow the rules we have

More tests being made available, and quickly, and also results coming within 24 hours at most

Schools not panicking over every symptom and not requiring tests for a sneeze.

Also make the isolation period 7 days rather than 14 - people might comply with it then.

Oaktree55 · 18/09/2020 17:17

@Fortyfifty I agree personally I think it’s pretty shit for kids to not have holiday but the consensus view is schools must be fully open. Personally I’d prefer blended learning, which could enable schools to operate with less transmission, but I’m in the minority.

Fortyfifty · 18/09/2020 22:46

I'm for blended learning also. My DDs 6th form college has been doing it due a few weeks. Half at home, half in class. Its not ideal but seems better if guarantees continuity and teachers and students who remain well and in college at least half the time. It also means there's already provision for home learning or teaching for those who do need to isolate for 14 days.

Primary schools would need a different system but certainly its possible on secondary education, provided the kids are given the tools or access for online lessons.
