Lockdown private v public sector

Racoonworld · 18/09/2020 06:28

Most people I have heard that want another lockdown work in public sector jobs that are completely safe. Those in private sector jobs are terrified of another lockdown and would rather take their chances with the disease. I fall under the latter, a second lockdown is a luxury lots of people can’t afford to have.

I agree. Plus public sector get paid if they self isolate private don't.

BikeTyson · 18/09/2020 06:44

I agree - I work in the public sector and while I really do not want a second lockdown, it’s not because I fear for my job or my business. I can’t imagine how stressful it must be to have that worry on top of how difficult COVID already is. With the ending of the furlough scheme that’s going to be even more of a concern.

The recession tends to come for the public sector later on so I suspect we’re all screwed in the longer term, but at least it’s not a short term concern.

I’m a teacher. I don’t want another lockdown (although live in an area under restriction). I taught live lessons to timetable all throughout lockdown with my own primary aged children at home, not sure I could face that again. My colleagues feel the same.

What I do want is the same ‘Covid secure’ measures as my friends who work in the private sector ie social distancing, well ventilated rooms, enhanced cleaning measures.

Unfortunately this week has felt very much like the start of March in school. We have one year year group out due to positive cases, lots of pupils self isolating and parents withdrawing their children.

KnobChops · 18/09/2020 06:50

Public sector- NHS cancer services and have worked my arse off throughout, on half a team initially as people were deployed. A third of us caught Covid.
I would be furious if there was another lockdown where people couldn’t work. We MUST allow people to work and schools to stay open, even if it means we just stay in our household groups the rest of the time. I worry a lot about the fallout economically and for society.

Racoonworld · 18/09/2020 06:52

@motherrunner imagine having to face working at home and looking after you children, as well as having the threat of redundancy and no money to pay the bills though. That’s what a lot of people are facing right now.

Totally agree
And the people making the decisions are public sector, most with no experience of the business world

I got no help at all ,due to earnings being (just) over the limit
Worked throughout lock down

Dreading another lockdown

PlateTectonics · 18/09/2020 07:00

I work for the public sector (and wfh during lockdown). I agree with you that I am lucky to have no imminent worries about my job (although redundancies aren't impossible, even in the public sector), but I definitely do not want another lockdown.

motherrunner · 18/09/2020 07:00

@Racoonworld I absolutely understand that and have utmost sympathy. I think you misinterpreted my post. We should be directing our ire at the government. The government should help to protect public services (like schools) so we can stay open continuously which will then relive pressure on working parents. At the moment with pupils in and out that I will created added pressure I’m sure.

motherrunner · 18/09/2020 07:00

*not sure where the rogue ‘I’ came from!

Passthecake30 · 18/09/2020 07:05

I work in public sector (local government) wfh the entire time. I’m not concerned about my job at present, however, budgets are extremely tight due to additional costs incurred and we’ll need some way to close a £50m gap.... I think jobs will be lost at some point but not yet.

cyclingmad · 18/09/2020 07:08

I have friends in public sector some work for TfL who need a bail out another lockdown will most certainly mean redundancies. It might not be immediate but it is coming.

Councils are also in alot of debt again wont be right now but its coming.

alreadytaken · 18/09/2020 07:10

I dont want another national lockdown but nor do I want to see health services overwhelmed and an even bigger backlog of people in pain. If people are too stupid or selfish to keep infection rates down any other way there may be no choice.

cyclingmad · 18/09/2020 07:12

Oh and OP those who work at TfL for almost 2 yra now its been doing transformation and staff have been made redundant. One of my friends in her department went through two rounds of transformation already and in march they almost ran out of money then baiked out and due to run out of money again. So I think its disingenuous to say oublic sector dont havr to be worried imagine already for 2yrs pre covid having to do that and now the risk is even higher

Jrobhatch29 · 18/09/2020 07:17

I agree with you. We are terrified of another lockdown. The company my DP works for will never survive another lockdown and he's our main income. It keeps me awake at night more than the worry of covid.

frozendaisy · 18/09/2020 08:41

I don't know anyone who wants another lockdown private or public sector.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/09/2020 08:45

Yep. I'm private sector and was furloughed for 19 weeks. Business has really picked up thankfully but my directors are now saddled with 6 figure debt, another lockdown would be the end.

BabyLlamaZen · 18/09/2020 09:12

No one I know wants lockdown. Those I know want people to bloody stick to the rules and learn to social distance so that we can avoid a second lock down.
